Is the mossberg 500 shotgun with pistol grip and adjustable stock good?

Hello everyone, I want to buy a shotgun. This will be my first shotgun. I was considering getting something with a pistol grip, and this one here seems really good.

Looks cool, and has a nice stock that can hold shells too. It is 400. I won't be using it for hunting. I will just use it "for fun" at the range. I have some rifles, but not a shotgun. If anyone has these, do u think it's worth the 400?

Personally no I don't think $400 is a good price

The version with just a pistol grip is about $250 to $275 and the collapsible stock should run around $50 to $75

I do like the collapsible stocks better than pistol grips , folders (up or to the side),or full stock with pistol grips for their versatility

There is a collapsible that absorbs recoil for about $100 which wuld still put you at less than $400 with a better stock

    But then again

If you got that off the Mossberg site then they list MSRP which no gun sales for

The guy below is correct about pawn shops

I have bought many as new guns from pawn shops and then sold them for much more

A lot of people tend to buy guns and stick them in their closet after they die their kids sell them off or when the rent is due on a slow month the guns go to pawn

I have also bought a few guns from Walmart

I don't like th store but the guns were as good as at other stores

    =================================

I just saw this very gun at the gun show today

A dealer here known for jacking prices up at shows was selling them for $339

Saw a used pistol gripped version for $180

Unfortunately I was there for Bates boots and holosights

I agree $400 is way to much. You can buy the 500 with a shotgun and rifled slug barrel cheaper than $400. I bought my youngest the 500 bantam combo in mossy oak for $305 plus $25 shipping on gunbroker. A pawn shop is a great place to buy modern firearms. You also might try the Sporting goods stores or Gun shops that have indoor ranges, where you can try it before you buy it. Also check with your local gun/shooting clubs I am sure they will help you. The only good reason, other than its cool, for a pistol grip is if you are going to hunt turkey, where you hold the shotgun at the ready for long periods of time. As for a collapsible stock, if it is to adjust for your size, they are not that accurately calibrated in being able to fit you and your style of shooting You would be better off having a good gunsmith do the adjusting on a regular stock. If this is a folding stock, very hard to make any adjustments for fit with them. however, If this is to shoot sporting clays, it won't matter, blast away. If you are going to shoot skeet or trap, you will not like the Mossberg 500. Go to a over/under. Mossberg has the Silver Reserve line under $500. In my area, The Big 5 Sporting goods has then on sale for $329 over the July 4th weekend. No matter what you buy, take it to a shotgun range and pattern it. Use at least three different brands of shells ,same size shot,to see what works best.

    Good luck.

I buy Mossberg 500's and there derivative contract guns all the time at pawn shops for between $100 and $150 + sales tax. I never pay more than that and they have to be in like new condition for $150 + sales tax. That leaves you with around $235 to buy all the add on extras that you want. That stock and pistol grip can be had for $100 or less and as the one post pointed out, you can get a recoil absorbing adjustable stock for $100. I haven't purchased a new Mossberg shotgun in 15 years and I only paid $175 + tax for that Model 500 and $250 + tax for a semi-auto model 5500. The value on a Mossberg goes down by half as soon as you remove it from the box.

Ok let me tell u something.. if u are not using this for huntin i would especially advise a 500..and not a 870(unless u hunt, which your not) its a great range or target shooting gun.. but let me just say i would not spend 400$$ for that.. if u want a pistol mossberg 500 12 gauge then go to either 2 places...a gunshop/pawn shop. they will have used ones that are just as new..and that are bearly fired..and the 2nd choice is walmart....they have a mossberg 500 12gauge for like 300$$ its not a pistol grip but who cares..full grips are just as fun..i will add the link in the sources but i would definetly get this instead of that 400$$ one..if u want that extra thing on the end with the shell carrier then buy that extra, as an accessories..hope this helped you.

Source(s): dont listen to wat ppl. say when they tell u used guns and if u get them at walmart will SUCK..cause they do NOT.. i own this exact gun..got it right in the store and had to sign only 1 small short paper...get this and u wont be sorry. HI...... I'm not sure where to start.... I would avoid that shotgun.... In my opinion it is a silly toy. Now dont get me wrong.... I own 2 Mossberg 500 Persuader Cruiser models as well as Mossberg field shotguns and deer shotguns.... Mossberg is my favorite brand of shotgun.... If you want a shotgun thats "cool" and fun to shoot just purchase a 6 shot or 8 shot shotgun. DO NOT get the model with a pistol grip only -- I swear you will regret it. They kick like a mule and your hand will hurt after a few shots.... A regular stock Mossberg 500 Persuader Cruiser is way more fun because you can actualy hit something with it. If you hold it at your side and fire it the recoil isnt bad either.... The pistol only one gets boring fast and your hand hurts too.... The model you have in the photo looks like a shotgun that wants to be something else. The stock looks like an AR15 stock but its not on an AR15 which makes it dorky looking.... A regular Persuader looks a little tamer than the one you have in the photo but trust me they are much more fun. And they cost about $300.......

Source(s): This is my personal favorite..... Everybody in the family and folks at the gun club like shooting this..... 8 Shot 20 inch barrell..... http://www.mossberg.com/images/Mossberg_Guns/930/N... This is a good second choice. Its a 6 shot 18 1/2 inch barrell...... http://www.mossberg.com/images/Mossberg_Guns/930/N... What ever you do avoid these pistol grips... They kick to hard and are unenjoyable to shoot... The idea is to have fun... Not get hand arthritis.. AVOID.... http://www.mossberg.com/images/Mossberg_Guns/930/N...

I am in the same situation you are in..... I am looking for a "fun" shotgun to shoot clay pigeons with and double as home defense. I don't have one yet, but since I have been searching for the right deal I can pretty much tell you $400 is a bit too much for a Mossberg shotgun.

My personal plan is to go to a gun show and pick up a used shotgun in decent condition. They can be had a drastically reduced prices used, and for most people their "used" guns might as well be new as far as function goes. Put on a new finish like Gun-Kote, or use a bluing kit and it will look new. For home defense get a shorter barrel, keep the other for range use. Replace the stock with something from a catalog or something.

You have a new looking, good functioning, customized shotgun that works for home defense and range use for half the retail price of one of these "tacti-cool" guns..... thats my plan anyway.

The mossberg 500 has been around for a long time. It's very reliable and mossberg has a very good reputation for service when a gun is returned to them for warranty work. My question for you is this: "What do you plan to shoot with it?" If you are shooting slugs and buckshot, and other short range shooting, this will do. It's not for clay targets or hunting. $400. seems slightly high, but it just may be that I'm not up to date on this particular firearm. Mossberg has made thousands of these, if not more, so don't be in a hurry and take your time to shop around.

Mossberg 500? Yes. $400? No. If your buying it for $400, it should be coming with a couple extra stocks (straight and collapsible) along with the pistol grip only, extended shell tube, and a bunch of other goodies.
