Do you get paid for being on a committee that benefits work?

I work in health care and was asked to co-chair a "voluntary" committee for safety & security. This will entail making and educating the workers in a disaster plan. I believe that since our efforts will help the organization in a work environment, we should be paid ( not just given pizza for our lunchtime meetings.) The scope of what they are asking for, will entail many hours of work and planning. Employees should be paid for training necessary to implement the plan. The person in the paid safety, security & infection control position started this committee to help him do his job, because he is overwhelmed. I feel that all employees should be paid for work that benefits the organization. Am I wrong?

If you are eligible for overtime and you work ot, you should be paid. If you are doing this as part of your normal workday, then no. Consider it an honor and an opportunity to show them what else you can do!
