Do you consider yourself a moderate minded American?

You hear so much talk about Right Conservative, Leftist Liberal. I'm not either one, I consider myself a moderate that takes away what I consider the positive attributes of both parties. How many more out there are like me and why?

I'm a left-leaning moderate. Wouldn't go so far as to call myself a liberal, but I have tendencies in that direction

Put it this way, I often ask myself, "What would people like Thomas Jefferson and James Madison think about this issue?" Sometimes it means I agree with the right, sometimes the left. But it doesn't mean I'm a moderate in the context of the last fifty years or so of American politics. Sometimes my ideas are radical in that context. It means sometimes people would call me a liberal, sometimes people call me a conservative. But I do believe in a moderate course of action to achieve a "radical" long term shift in goals. My best example would be privatizing social security. I know that we can't just end it and have private accounts, but we can ween ourselves off this black hole of government waste.

What it comes down to is I'm anti-statist, which positions against the Republicans and Democrats sometimes. It means I recognize that the classical liberal views of the founding fathers can't be categorized squarely in the conservative or today's social liberal camps.

I will remind people of one thing, though. Most Americans are already moderate in the grand spectrum. There is a wide spectrum from USSR type socialism to mini-anarchy. (Which reminds of the saying about going full circle to end up where you began, in this example a stateless society) I don't think the American liberals are that far to the "left" and American conservatives are that far to the "right".

I consider myself more of a moderate. And I think that's the way with most Americans. I think the winner of this election won't be determined by the number of left wing socialists or right wing neocons, but by the moderates who make up the majority of registered voters. Only question is who seems more extreme to moderate voters? And who seems like the safer bet? Hmmmmmm!

There are alternatives, such as Libertarians, who also take away what some consider the positive attributes of both parties.

When you ask a conservative what he doesn't like about liberals, what does he say? "They're intolerant - they want to take our money, tell us what kind of lightbulbs we have to use...." When you ask a liberal what he doesn't like about conservatives, what does he say? "They're intolerant - they want to run our spiritual lives and sex lives."

Why do they lead with those arguments? Because they know it's their best case - the case for freedom.

So, why compromise freedom? Why choose which freedom(s) are more or less important to you? Why not vote for freedom all the time?

I am a moderate minded European. I am more conservative than most Europeans but I'm not conservative in the American sense (I don't pay attention to the Bible, I dislike capital punishment, I hate Gitmo, I'm pro choice and pro gay rights).

I am also pro free-market and anti-multiculturalism. I dislike Islam with the same (or greater) intensity as I dislike Christianity

I am definitely a Moderate. I agree with some points from both sides. I will not vote one way or the other based on one issue, especially if it doesn't make a difference in my life.

Whoever recommended you that a progressive is correlated with Communism is largely an imbecile. a valid occasion may well be the Founding Father, they have been Revolutionaries and clearly not Comnunists. i discover myself being Conservative; upholding a ethical ethical experience that's deteriorated in right this moment's society. I even have faith in progressing the country. we don't recommend Liberty, Shiraz? How profoundly moronic. the typical public of the Founding Fathers have been Conservatives; be recommended previously making blatant comments.

Nope. Consider myself a fanatical Libertarian, nothing moderate about me at all.

I do not consider myself a moderate; that would be like drinking room temperature milk. Hot or cold; that's the drink. Moderate- spew it out.

Have a glass of luke-warm water!

  • In some things yes, in some things no. Which is, I believe, the same for all Americans. Contrary to the babble, we're not a nation of lemmings.
