Searching for a passage?

I'm searching for a passage that says something about 'do not tempt the spirit...'?

Its in the context of don't expect the Lord to do something you are perfectly capable of doing yourself.

Thanks

Update:

Another example I thought of is with those 'christian scientists' who let their children die when a single shot of anitbiotics would have saved their lives. That kind of thing.

I don't recall those exact words, but that message is spelled out here fairly well:

Exodus chapter 17:1 Then all the multitude of the children of Israel setting forward from the desert of Sin, by their mansions, according to the word of the Lord, encamped in Raphidim, where there was no water for the people to drink. 2 And they chode with Moses, and said: Give us water, that we may drink. And Moses answered them: Why chide you with me? Wherefore do you tempt the Lord? 3 So the people were thirsty there for want of water, and murmured against Moses, saying: Why didst thou make us go forth out of Egypt, to kill us and our children, and our beasts with thirst? 4 And Moses cried to the Lord, saying: What shall I do to this people? Yet a little more and they will stone me. 5 And the Lord said to Moses: God before the people, and take with thee of the ancients of Israel: and take in thy hand the rod wherewith thou didst strike the river, and go.

It is not only in the Bible, but in every esoteric practice as well. It boils down to: "Don't scorn anything that you know nothing about. It will turn around and bite you when you least expect it. Take voodoo as an example.

    D&C 58: 26, 29

26 For behold, it is not meet that I should command in all things; for he that is compelled in all things, the same is a slothful and not a wise servant; wherefore he receiveth no reward.

29 But he that doeth not anything until he is commanded, and receiveth a commandment with doubtful heart, and keepeth it with slothfulness, the same is damned.

    Are you thinking of this?

    Ephesians 4:30 (New International Version)

30And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

I thought about this and nothing comes to mind! but it is a saying I have heard also, but I can't say it is scripture. Maybe Wisdom? or Proverbs might shed some light on it. Sorry.
