Before you leave home make sure you have a bag or pack that you can lock. Bring padlocks with you too (they are cheap in Thailand if you forget.)

Leave valuables at home! Don't bring a precious heirloom piece of jewelry or something you would really cry over if it became stolen - leave stuff like that home!

If something comes up missing it is just as likely that a fellow tourist stole from you as much as the hotel staff - probably more so!

Use the security box for storage of valuables. Some cheap places may have a common safety box where you put your money in an envelope and the hostel stores it. I bring a small locking bag that I use to keep money and important stuff in. The bag would have to fit in a large envelope. The bag won't stop people from stealing from you but you would notice that the bag was tampered with right away! Something like this: http://www.banksupplies.com/catalog/index.php/cPat...

With hotel rooms in some cities real cheap why not get a better place? Basic cheap air conditioned room in Bangkok will start around 600 baht. Smaller cities even cheaper! Sample hotel price list. http://www.sawasdee-hotels.com/

I would leave the laptop at home and not worry about having it stolen or damaged. There are lots and lots of internet shops all over Thailand. You could use a flash drive with FireFox or Opera on it with your favorites that match your home computer. A flash drive will fit in your pocket or safety box. You can also add Notepad and other free downloads to that FD. http://portableapps.com/about/what_is_a_portable_a...

Make copies of the info page in your passport. You can "store need to know" information and emergency contact information in email form. You can access that info in any internet shop if needed. You can also save your flight itinerary and confirmation numbers in email form too! Don't use an email account that other people know your password to. Yahoo and Hotmail are free email accounts, you can open up another account where no one knows your password!

Be careful of who you travel with! If you are traveling with or hook up with a person who did not come over with you from back home - don't trust him!

    Have a good trip.

I leave my backpack in the hostel and I bring along my passport, cash, cards with me wherever I go in the day.

Alternatively, you can also use padlocks to lock up your backpacks if you think carrying your passport and cash around the whole day is dangerous.

    Either way, there are risks.

there is not safe way to secure your belongings at the hostels. The more you want to secure your belongings, it would just attract more attention.

I have stayed at a hostels, and was using a bicycle chain to lock the luggage, and cover the chain with a towel so it won't visible to other.

Again, there is not such thing as being secure at a hostels.

    Good Luck.

if there is a safe put your personal stuff in it and make sure it is locked. backpacks should be safe if the room is secure (locked door) and it is a decent hostel.
