why does my 1 mnth old saint bernard bite too much?
not that she bites, but she tends to play that way...I have a 5yr old and a 2yr old and I'm a little scared to let them play with her..Is there a way to calm her from doing that? A way that she can play without having to "bite" all the time?

Puppy mouthing. Think about your kids. Did they go through a stage where everything went into their mouth? Of course they did!
Same with your giant puppy.
As a bit of an expert on giant puppies and small children, there are things you can do. First is, remember, a mouthing puppy is learning "bite inhibition". This is good. A pup who doesn't mouth may never learn not to bite for real -- or how to control the pressure when they put their mouth on you. Learning bite inhibition is a good thing, and the only way to learn it is going through this stage.
Next, how to keep your kids from becoming pin cushions from those sharp little teeth.
A variety of ways. Pick what works for you. Combine methods if necessary. #1 should be at all times used:
1) Kids must be taught to fold their arms (get all dangling parts UP and tucked in) and TURN AWAY and STAND STILL when pup is charging or jumping or mouthing. This keeps kid parts from being used as toys and also removes the reinforcement the dog is getting from a kid flapping about like prey. Remember, pups have a prey drive, don't incite it! When pup settles, they can pet him calmly.
2) Try this yourself first and see if it works on your pup. Some pups back off immediately, others become way excited. Standing still (no running) give a LOUD DRAMATIC YIP when the pup puts his mouth on you. This tells them in puppy language that they hurt you. Some dogs will respond quite well to this and back off. Others don't. Try it yourself to find out which your dog is. If it works, have your kids do it too. Remember, NO running and screaming with the dog. PERIOD.
3) If the yip doesn't work, get bitter apple spray. Spray the kids hands, arms and shoes. Won't hurt as long as you don't rub it in their eyes. This tastes bad to most dogs and some will stop the mouthing just because you taste bad.
4) Another method for persistent pups is the shaker can. Get several small medicine bottles (plastic) and put some pennies in them. They should make a nasty rattle when shaken. Dogs hate this sound. Remember, its' the SOUND that's the negative, not the can as a projectile!
Now when the pup charges throw the can at the ground at your own feet. NOT AT THE DOG. The sound of it hitting the ground with that nasty rattle is what they don't like.
I would sent my son at age 6 out in a pack of giant breed puppies with two little shakers, one in each pocket of his jacket. When a pup would charge with evil intent, can 1 would get thrown down at my son's feet. Pup adjusted the charge to dance about my son, but not mouth or knock him over. Can 2 was a safety back up, in case another pup was charging soon after. Soon he could just rattle the can a bit inside a pocket and the charge would stop. Soon there were no more charges or mouthing.
If you ever see a person use a pack of tic tacs shaken in their pocket as a "stop it" message to a dog, their dog has been trained on a shaker can. The shaker can be placed on a table if your dog begs, or set on a door knob if your dog jumps at doors. They jump at the door, and you don't even have to be there, the can falls off and makes a noise. They learn quick.
Remember, it's the SOUND not the action of tossing the can down at YOUR OWN feet. Never throw one at or near the dog. ONLY your own feet.
This phase will pass. Your kids may be knocked about a bit but as long as YOU don't make a big issue of it, they won't either. My son got a pierced ear from a wayward pup flying by and nipping at his ear. He screamed until I informed him that saved us money on a piercing, and should I run and get an earring to put in there? His screams turned to laughter and we put a bit of antiseptic on it and he still laughs about it to this day (a good 8 years later!).
Edited to add: I'm assuming you had this dog for a month, not that it's a month old. Hope I'm right!

Don't worry about that :P
As puppies they like to bite and chew anyone and anything, as they are teething.
I have just got a puppy to accompany my German Sheperd. It just bites the other dogs all day as it is trying to show it's dominance to what it sees is the 'pack' leader. It will definately grow out of it.
Also, introduce toys such as ropes and tennis balls. They should attract the attention of the 2 and 5 year old dogs and will make the puppy want it. Thus, diverting it's focus to a toy.
When the older dogs begin to bight back, it should get the hint :P
Hope that helps.

Is the puppy displaying every other special conduct. Is it limping, is it status and shivering adore it does not desire to transport. are its gums faded. does it wince while you contact it. Make definite you do an overly thorough examine from nostril to tail. and watch your puppy intently. if it does not exhibit any indicators of pressure, then i would not take it to the vet until you believe that you simply must. Not having visible the st bernards conduct. it might have simply been mothering the puppy or seeking to restrain it as a mama puppy could it is puppy. Your puppy might had been crying as a signal of submissive ness to the st bernard. It is potent how difficult puppies may also be with each and every different with out doing any harm, however within the identical token, if this can be a severe altercation. one chunk can do abundant harm. I could ensure you will have the opposite puppies house owners understanding in the event you do become aware of a quandary along with your puppy so they are able to pay for the vet costs. You realize your puppy. maintain a near eye on it for the following couple of days and when you see any signs of it being in agony.... then get it to the vet.

You need to get her some rubber toys to teeth on and play with and don't worry because your other dogs will let her know who is boss and will mouth back at her. I have a four month old who bites as well and it is just because their teeth are annoying them and they want something to bite to get the irritation away. As she gets older her teething will become less and less. Hope this helps!!!:) If she starts to bite too much just walk away from her and she will calm down.

WHO on God's Green Earth let you have a puppy that young? I hope it still has it's mother.
Anyway, get an old pair of jeans and cut off the legs. Take one leg and put it inside the other leg. It prevents biting thru the first layer and makes a cheap and easy toy.
Yes, he's teething.

4 weeks old? and away from mum? where did you get her - dogs need to be with mum until 8 weeks - they learn many social skills from her including bite inhibition.
ALL puppies bite. You need to supervise play time and stop as soon as puppy bites. Say OW! and turn away - ignore the pup until it calms again - keep on until it learns.
Dogs should be supervised with children ALWAYS

i think your dog will grow out of it, most puppies bite playfully. it shouldnt hurt anyone, but to be sutre keep an eye on your kids when they are playing with the dog.
if somehow your dog continues to bite, or ity gets more viscous, you should shout "NOO" or "BAD" really loud when your dog does this, it should stop her from biting.
Also, dogs shouldnt be seperated from their mothers until they atre 8 weeks old. it is very cruel to seperate them before. puppies that age are too weak to be on their own, and need mum and brothers and sisters to learn how to be a proper dog, how to play that kind of thing. it os very crucial for a pup to be with its mum for no less than 8 weeks.

hey,
at that age, your dog is most probably biting because she is teething. Her teeth will be sprouting up any time soon and they will be hurting her.
It is an annoying stage for us owners which every dog goes through. To help her, buy her toys which will help her rub here teeth against them!
Hope this helped, goodluck

She's teething. I would suggest buying her a chew toy of some sort to help out with the irritation.

Because she missed out on crucial bite inhibition training that is provided my mom and littermates since you took her away 4 weeks to early.
