My dog ate a 5 oz. Hershey's Dark Chocolate bar and some dark chocolate Raisinettes?

My dog ate a 5 oz. Hershey's Dark Chocolate bar and some dark chocolate Raisinettes. He threw up some chocolate around six hours after eating them. It's now been about 13 hours, and he hasn't thrown up anymore, and I haven't noticed any diarrhea. He's about 17-20 pounds. I called the vet earlier and they said to watch for more puking and diarrhea, which i haven't seen. I'm still worried, he seems much more tired than normal, and is breathing fairly heavily. Should i be concerned?

Update:

Yeah, our neighbor kids put candy on our dining room table, and didn't realize that our dog can get up there.

Oh, and he actually is having diarrhea.

Call your vet again and tell him/her about the breathing and unusual tiredness. Chocolate can kill a dog it's the caffeine that makes the heart beat extremely fast and it can die.

Dark chocolate is the worst kind of chocolate for a dog. If he survives this, he might have kidney/liver damage, so really be careful what you have around him because he demonstrated he will seek out the wrong foods. Stay in touch with the vet, you may need to take him in at any time during the next 24-48 hours over this.

Source(s): Also - raisins and grapes are poisonous for dogs.

Yes having a dog eat that much amount of chocolate is like you drinking 8oz. of Lysol. Chocolate is extremely deadly for dogs. I think you should take him to the vet for a check up fast. Hopefully it's not as bad. Good luck. And dogs use chairs to get on the tables. And before any kids come to your house make sure they don't have chocolate with them.

    Yes you should be concerned.

I don't see any benefit to harassing you. You understand that chocolate bad for a dog, and you made a good faith effort to call your vet. You will take better precautions next time. The issue is making sure your dog is alright, not to make to feel bad. If you care about your dog, you already feel bad.

The vet made a recommendation based on the dog's behavior at that time. Now that the dog is behaving in a way suggesting it is worse, you should call your vet again.

I would only rely on the Vet's recommendation at this point. If you call the Vet, the worst thing they will say is bring your dog in for them to look at it.

You should be concerned that someone is leaving chocolate candy around where the dog can get it.

Is it hot or humid where you are? That could be the cause of the heavy breathing and fatigue. If I were you I'd be more careful what you (or anyone else in the household) leaves lying around.

ya i would be concerned. chocolate is on the list of things dogs shouldn't have, along with potatoes(causes worms) by the way. I would just take him to the vet as soon as possible. its better to be safe then sorry!! hope he's doing better soon though!!

You should be concerned candy isn't good for a dog. It gives them worms for shore. Throwing up isn't a good sign. Dogs know when something isn't right. You need to get him to eat something. It only for him to clean his system out. I'd take him to the vet in the morning if I was you.

the dog should be fine but i would keep the vet updated on the situation just incase, it sounds like the dog has puked/pooped everything out and is just tired from all that puking and pooping

i think that your dog will be fine! my dogs got into my daughters easter basket that was put up and they are okay! just watch him to make sure that he don't do what the vets warned you about. but from experience i would say that your baby will be okay! good luck! i hope everything turns out okay!

I hope your dog is fine and heals. I had dogs that ate chocolate like crazy and it didn't hurt them.
