BEWARE government PRIVATE agencies are bad for you. The DVLA are conning people out of money by not sending regular reminders to the people who are forced to employ them. Instead they send a few, then when they have your trust they do not send it and wait awhile so that they can fine you £80.00 and rip you off with a further fine, in my case £5.50 for road tax on a vehicle that has not been on the road for over 5 years and is not drivable. They state they are not obliged to send reminders, WHY!!! they con you into trusting them and stab you in the back, its immoral, needless, profiteering. A bit like the principles of Mugabe Brown the man in charge. The sorn need only be filled out once, they know who drives what and whether or not the vehicle is taxed or MOTed, its on their computors by law. Its jobs for the boys and nothing to do with keeping check on motoring. I live in a street with 2 unlicensed drivers who are still on the road after being reported. DVLA answers invited please!!!!

Hello GAVME, if you notified them of change of ownership before the date they have quoted you on the fine. Get in touch with them and show the reciept from the post office for the changeover date, they will have to back down. If you sold it to a dealer he should be responsible for it after he bought it, but strangely enough, dealers do not have to sorn vehicles, money talks, but so do votes.

Who profits. The government does. Because our beloved MPs agreed to this fixed penalty because according to the government's Secretary of State for Transport the Exchequer was losing £193 Million per year due to 60,000 people per month evading payment of their licence fee. 

In fact, the late licensing fixed penalty was brought in by DVLA under direct orders from the Blair government from March 2006 and endorsed by the "House of Commons Standing Committee on Delegate Legislation" who have set targets that DVLA have been ordered to comply with. It is in fact another New Labour stealth tax. The penalty is reduced to £40 for "prompt payment" it then goes up to £80 if the payment is not prompt and then to £100 if your case goes to Court  the fine being imposed whether you are present or not. Is it fair?  I personally do not think so. If you think it is unfair do not complain to DVLA. you need to complain to your Member of Parliament.

My wife had a letter off them yesterday, saying that she failed to re-license a car that we sold in part-ex for our new car.

She took the tax disc that was on our old car to DVLA office, to claim refund on what was remaining on tax, and also to hand in the Yellow part of the V5, to notify them that she was no longer the keeper of this vehicle.

They now say we have to pay a Â£40 penalty within 2 weeks or Â£80 if it is not paid by end of August.

Anyone who disputes that has never been with BT.

I know when my tax disc ends, I don't need reminders.
It does actually say on the disc when it ends, so drivers should be responsible in knowing when it ends.
