Most modern day guns will function even if they are wet, assuming the barrel does not have water in it. The cartridges are water tight unless submerged for a long time.
If the gun is not cleaned and lubricated it will eventually rust.
A muzzle loader would be a different situation.

Many guns will work for a while even after being wet.
The reason guns do NOT work after being wet is different for different circumstances:
1) It might rust and impede the movement of parts.
2) The water might interfere with the oiled parts and create friction.
3) The ammunition might get wet and not fire when the cap is percussed.
