What do you do when you're retired?
I mean think about it. All your life, you're going to school to go to college...you're going to college to go to a career...and you're working your freaking entire life...then suddenly you just stop. You have nothing else to do for the remainder of your life. It's like you're waiting for the next step of your life - death. Sorry to say it that way, but it's true...
Yeah, I guess you can pick up hobbies and help out in charities and such...but that does get old (no pun intended)...
And it's kinda scary, right? Straight up, I'm afraid to retire, one of my worst fears...especially for a person like me who can't sit still.

My dad is 81.
He:
Serves on a city planning committee.
Serves on a prison ministry board.
Volunteers for building projects [like Habitat for Humanity]
Hosts a book review group [everyone reads books, comments on them]
Grows lots of fruits, vegetables, and roses...giving most of them away
Has a workshop filled with projects/experiments
Travels to see his children and grandchildren
Sails his sailboat
Attends musical and theatrical performances
Volunteers in a resue mission's food kitchen
Walks 3 miles each day
Goes on backpack trips with his 86 year old brother.
And MUCH more. He is so busy he has no time to sit in front of the TV and vegetate.
The most important thing is to cultivate a wide variety of interests in life....Don't wait until retirement to do so!

Being from Florida, and working for a hospice organization, I have found most of the retired people have heavier schedules than parents with jobs and kids! Many of them do volunteer, but so many others are just involved in a million activities. As for my in-laws, they retired earlier, but my father-in-law then worked on his own part-time as a real estate agent (independent and still holds the license) and since then, he has a lot of properties that provide them with much needed supplemental income. Just because you retire doesn't mean you can't work. The difference is, as a retiree, you don't have the burden of wanting to climb the corporate ladder and involve yourself in company politics. You do your thing and go home.

Is someone making you retire? My hubby was forced into it by the mine closing. Now he drives a bus and calls me from all over the US telling me he is watching Hooter girls wash his bus, I am thinking he should of had a better plan. So keep planning. Me? I am going to reture soon too and babysit my Grandbaby!
