How can we get our new puppy to poop and pee outside?

We live in an apartment, so there's no backyard for her do go sniffing around on her own. We want her to take care of her doggy business while on her walks on the leash, but that has been rare so far. She has been on many walks since we have owned her, and she has only pooped once outside. She mostly does everything in her cage overnight. We've only found one little pee spot inside the house, so she's been prettly good about not marking up our floors in any way. But we really need to get her into the habit of going while she's outside. Any advice? She is six months old--an adorable little black and brown yorkshire terrier.

Thanks!

If you are going to train her then you are going to have to take the time of taking her out Feed her early ing the evening and then take her for a mice long want until she does her tang. You have to be consistent so that she gets into a routine.

I just reccently got a jack russell from the from the Animal Shelter here and they said he was "partially potty trained.' What a load of CRAP!

Anyway, for the longest time it seemed, we were having the hardest time getting him to let us know he had to go to the bathroom. So the last and final time that he decided to use the bathroom (poop) right in front of us, my hubby decided to rub his nose in it and give him a few whacks on the butt with a newspaper and took him out.

I know that is not the ideal way for most people but I'm telling you, we tried everything. Even took him to the vet in fear that maybe he had a potty problem but checked out normal.

We would feed him when we ate, we would take him out every two hours, I mean, we literally TRIED everything. After that one memorable spanking, he has finally started going to the door and whimpering.

Now we're just having a hard time getting him to hold it while we're out for a little while. Looks like we will soon be investing in a crate.

Goodluck. Sometimes it can be difficult but just make sure when she makes a mess in the house, you take her to it and tell her no. Take her out immediately and stand there. You have to be patient. Try to take them some where that is not too exciting as well. A place they don't really have room to run around and sniff. Near a garage or some where similar.

Sucks but they will eventually learn!

that's actually a simpler process than most people think. Lay some newspaper in the cage, this wy the dog will get used to 'going' on that piece of material, then once it's let out of the cage and wander around the apartment, occasionaly "scatter" pieces of newspaper throughout, this way the dog will go on the paper (be sure to have a little more near the door) after a few weeks of that, start to remove the newpspaper, this way when the dog has to use the bathroom, it will go near the door, (be sure to leave a few pieces by the door still) eventually the dog will go by the door w/o having to have newspaper laying around on the floor b/c I know that's un-attractive for your homes layout. If the dog poops, be sure to scold it, that doesn't mean abuse it and smack it and hit it, but just say NO! in a deep tone and point at the poo :) lol... A way that is VERY affective w/ pee and pooping in the house is to rub their noses in there waste, that doesn't mean jam there nose or rube there nose in it hard for 5 mins, but jsut a fast touch of the poop or pee for about 5-10 seconds while still saying NO! BAD! This is a very effective way, I did that w/ my dog and he was house-trained within a few days... very simple... I wish you the best of luck! :)

Well take her walks daily like 3x a day and when she goes in the house make sure you scold her. I know it might be hard scolding a cute puppy but they learn that way. Also use puppy pads, I had a Lhasa apso and we bought puppy pads cause she wouldn't stop going in the house. Within a week she stopped peeing the floors. The puppy pads have like a smell that attracts the dog to them. :) Also once she does poop and pee outside you should praise her or give her a treat, So then she knows what she did is right and she'll start to do it more.

Most irratating part of a puppy!

Here are sometimes when they normally need to do some buisness:

    When they wake up

    Befor they go to sleep

    After eating

    Minutes after drinking

After Chewing on a toy/after playing

Here are some signs you can look for when they have to do some buisness:

    Staring at you

    Sniffing around

    Pacing

Just watch for those signs and those times and you should be fine.

Make sure her cage is not to big for her, or she will have enough room to create a potty spot, but, not to small so shes cramped. Also don't cover the whole bottom of the cage with carpet or some kind of bedding.

Maybe consider putting a potty pad in 1 corner of the house.

    Good Luck! シ

    Hope I helped シ

First off don't take her for long drawn out walks to go potty. Take her to the same place every time. Tell her "go potty (her name) several times. Stay there if you know that she really has to go. If she goes in her cage overnight, try not feeding her or having her drink past 5 or 6pm. Make the last potty time between 9 or 10 pm. Also if she goes poo in her cage, scoop it up (rubber glove/paper towel) and put it in the area of where you would like her to do her duty. AFTER she goes potty reward her with "good girl, good potty outside" say it a lot and act as if she just saved a child from a burning building, they love praise. Then as a reward take her for a walk, or just for the added exercise. Dogs can go on command when trained. Remember, do not show frustration in your voice or actions...they pick up on that and it brings on confusion. Be consistant with potty times. Set an egg timer if you have to by the hour, two hours etc...whatever works. If she potties in between shorten the time vise versa. Good Luck!

The most important thing is for you to be consistent! Most puppies dont like going outside with a leash on, in the very beggening, just because they are not use to it, so you need to get her use to it. Puppies need to be on a schedule, walk her every 2-3 hours and about 20min after every meal, for the first few months so she can use to the routine, and eventually she will get use to it and every time she does do her doggy buissness outside reward her with a treat so she knows she did something good! Wish you well!!

LOTS and LOTS of patients. Set a timer for every 20 min. and taker her out weather or not she has to go. Make sure when she is going out to say MAKE PEEPEE or MAKE POOPOO. Then when she goes reward her. A pat on the head a hug or what ever. Takes time. She should not be pooing in her kennel unless you are leaving her in there way to long. No more than 4 hours at a time. She is way to young to hold it longer than that. Plus try not to feed her right before she goes to bed at night. If ya'll cant have some one at home most of the time and she has to be kenneled then maybe you shouldn't have a dog. It's not fair to her at all. Dogs are not to have just because they are cute. They are like kids. The need constant attention and tending too.

AWWWW cute, have you tried the puppy pads. They sell them at the pet store and you place them by the door. They have an odor on them that makes them want to go to the pad by the door and eventually it teaches them to go to the door when they have to go to the bathroom. It may take some practice. Also, I bred puppies and I would take them outside three times a day, in the morning, at lunch and in the afternoon around dinner time. It is strange that the dog goes in the cage usually they will not poop where they sleep. If you catch her doing her business in the house then rub her nose in it and take her outside immediately and let her know that she has been a bad dog. Dogs are trained by the tone of your voice. If they are bad and you say bad dog in a tone that denotes bad then they know, whereas you say good doggie in a tone that denotes that in a high pitched voice then they know that that means good doggie. Also while you are at the pet store see if you can find a book about training your pet to go outside, they do make them as well. Good Luck

The thing to do is put a leash on her and tie the other end to u, then every hour take her out even if u need to set an alarm. She should never sleep in the same place she goes pee cz it can cause problems for her. Be patient she is still very young she will get it. When she does go then give her alot of praise, it will show her she did good by you and she will try to please you even more. Also when your training her use a word that she will understand when it is times to go out. With my dog if I say you gotta go OUT, then he knows he is going out to pee.

Never use negative reinforcement when training a puppy. Shoving their noses in messes they created hours ago does not help. They don't understand what they've done. Instead, praise the puppy like mad for going outside and doing her business. Keep in mind that puppies need to go every few hours. Get her in the habit of going first thing in the morning, after meals and before bed-time and praise her with love and treats each time. She'll get the hang of it.
