I was reading in the Word about calling upon the Name of the Lord. Do we continue to call upon Him as saved?

ones, even after we have believed?

This is not just something in the New Testament or today but started happening in the Old Testament.

"I called upon Your name, O Jehovah, from the lowest pit. You have heard my voice; do not hide Your ear at my breathing, at my cry" (Lam. 3:55-56).

Calling on the Lord began in the third generation of the human race with Enosh, the son of Seth (Gen. 4:26). The history of calling on the Lord's name continued throughout the Bible with Abraham (Gen. 12:8), Isaac (Gen. 26:25), Moses (Deut. 4:7), Job (Job 12:4), Jabez (1 Chron. 4:10), Samson (Judg. 16:28), Samuel (1 Sam. 12:18), David (2 Sam. 22:4), Jonah (Jonah 1:6), Elijah (1 Kings 18:24), and Jeremiah (Lam. 3:55). Not only did the Old Testament saints call on the Lord, they even prophesied that others would call on His name (Joel 2:32; Zeph. 3:9; Zech. 13:9).

Calling on the name of the Lord was practiced by the New Testament believers beginning on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:21).

Update:

While Stephen was being stoned to death, he was calling on the name of the Lord (Acts 7:59). The New Testament believers practiced calling on the Lord (Acts 9:14; 22:16; 1 Cor. 1:2; 2 Tim. 2:22). Saul of Tarsus received authority from the chief priests to bind all that called on the name of the Lord (Acts 9:14). This indicates that all the early saints were Jesus-callers. Their calling on the name of the Lord was a sign, a mark, that they were Christians. If we become those who call on the name of the Lord, our calling will mark us out as Christians.

Have we lost this as believers?

Does the Lord need to recover calling upon His Name among us?

" OH Lord JESUS!!!"

How does your spirit feel about this kind of matter before the Lord brothers and sisters?

Ty for sharing.

In Christ

sandy

Update 2:

When you look throughout the Psalms you see the psalmist calling out to the Lord continuously. Calls to be saved, calls of distress, calls to trust God, praises for God's redemptive work, praise of the redeemed, praise from the confident, confessions of national and personal sin, prayers against the unrighteous, history of God's faithfulness. This book is full of calls to God. Not not PRAYERS,PRAISES ,CALLS , but also SHOUTS and CRIES unto the Lord: for salvation, for troubled times and distress in hearts, to be taken out of the pits. Praises and songs of thankfulness too....Praises and songs...not just whispers...but words SHOUTED TO HONOR OUR LORD! LIFELONG PRAISE AND LIFELONG PRAYER....CALLING LIKE LOUDLY....CALLING FOR THE ONE WHO YOU CAN'T ALWAYS SEE! cALLING AND SHOUTING TO THE DISTANCE!

When I became saved and in my darkest moments and heaviest of burdens...I have CALLED AND even SHOUTED ..."LORD, SAVE ME!"

We need to pratice this for the Godly confidence we thereafter have. He will build us up. WE need to fill ourselves up with His presence. The new testament belieivers....always called upon the name of the Lord especially after the stoning of Stephen.... For the church was persecuted. The believers INVOKED our Lord to respond. Think of a screaming shouting child, wanting help. Shouting for you...or a crying baby as opposed to a quiet silent one.

Our attention quickly turns to the loudest sound....God is no different. And the bible says that there's power in the name of Jesus....When we invoke Him...he answers and when two or three 'CRY OUT TO HIM....HE IS IN THEIR MIDST...FILLING THEM WITH HIMSELF!"

I love these verses that you have quoted...in the last few days it has taught me a very special truth from God and it is quite delivering...it renews our minds as to how important the life of each believer is to the Lord. This verse is Lam 3: 55-56. Our precious Lord...hears us ..."CRY' even from our lowest pit...and he suffers with us as the good shepard and does all He can to free us and HIS SPIRIT IN US SO THAT WE WON'T BE HELD CAPTIVE! Isn't that great....even to the least amoung us. OUR CRYING OUT TO THE lord invokes his mercy...and his loving kindness. It strengthens us, builds up our faith...and increases HIS PRESENCE WITHIN US! iT ENPOWERS HIM TO ACT FOR US AS WE COOPERATE.

Why do we need to cooperate?

So that we can become rich....spiritually rich in all that really matters to the Lord. Filled with his kingdom....Look at the life of Stephen. Stephen knew that as he preached and spoke about Our Lord...that if caught he would be martyed and stoned to death. What amazes me about Stephen is how full of God's grace he became...he knew he would face death if caught and through the love of Christ...he honorably died giving Christians for generations and generations a glimpse into how we too can overcome evil with the goodness and grace of our Lord. His example is meant to encourage us and I am certain that if we knew more about Stephen...we would know he must have CRIED AND SHOUTED TO THE LORD EVERYDAY...he gave all glory to our lord too! Saul was given the authority to capture and bring them bound to Jerusalem( see Acts 9:21) Authority from the chief priests. So Stephen knew that if found he would be made an example of. Stephen so full of God...called and cried out to the Lord in the last moments of death...His face filled was filled with the glorious of God and it radiated all the beauty and light of God to the saved and unsaved alike. It radiated so much that Saul....couldn't forget it. This was the most solemn moment of Stephen's life (Saul's too) and he was the first to die showing the love that Christ displayed on the cross as he shed His blood for us all. Later Jesus Christ tranformed Saul and he became Paul. He became Chris's chosen instrument to carry the name of Christ to the gentiles.

There are many cross references to help us all see the will of the Lord in this matter. We need to practise calling upon the name of our Lord in all times...distressful and joyous...we need to shout the name of our Lord so that we loose our sense of ourselves and lay it all upon Christs altar...we then only need to receive the outpouring of all that God wants to give us. Crying and shouting draws the Lor's attention in a different way than prayer. I believe it shows....a demand to the Lord...one he is happy to fulfill...for it shows to Him our commitment and need for Him like nothing esle can! It validates Him in a way that He loves...otherwise scripture wouldn't tell us to cry and shout before Him!

Acts 9:21 is especially good. For those who saw the conversion and change in Saul they said....All those hearing him continued to be amazed and were saying, "Is this not he who in Jerusalem destroyed those who called on this name and who had come here for thje purpose of bringing them bound before the chief priests?(NASB) And here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call on thy name.

    See Psalm 18:6....calling when distress

    Psalm22:24...cry for the afflicted

    ISamuel 30:6...David...distressed

Psalm 18:4 The cords of death

    Psalm 13: 1. Jonah 2:2

I would just like to leave this question with this thought...when we empty ourselves...God is ready to fill us to overflowing with the living waters of life...to renew us and we all now know he dwells richly in the praises of his children...he also dwells richly in the cries of his Children too! SHOUT UNTO THE LORD.

GOD BLESS US ALL AS WE SEEK HIM AND DISCOVER MORE OF HIS WORD! AMEN!

Calling on the name of the Lord is, by the Bible's own definition, something that ONLY an individual already having experienced God's saving grace at some time in the past, is capable of doing.

The Bible clearly teaches that there is none that seeketh after God.

If we could take credit for seeking God of our own volition, we would have a claim to some work plus God's grace. The Bible allows no such teaching. Instead, God's word teaches that it is ALL grace, and NOT works, that saves us. Calling on God is a work that is only done as we are sanctified unto good works. Only God's children can please Him; can do good works.

When Jesus called Lazarus out of the grave after Lazarus had been dead four days, it was a dramatic illustration of the condition we were in before God saved us. He commanded, and also gave Lazarus the ears to hear and the life with which to respond.

God takes ALL of the initiative, we take NONE of the initiative, in our salvation.

The man who picked up a few sticks on the Sabbath day in ancient Israel, was stoned to death outside the camp, on order from God, to illustrate that it is NONE of our works that save us; it is ALL God's grace.

Saved people have come from every time period, beginning with Enosh, the son of Seth. God had to have saved him first, THEN Enosh began to call on the name of the Lord.

Hi I really enjoy your question, because our fourth son is really into the old writers and the books he has been reading are a lot on prayer E.M. Bounds, Ravenhill and a few others, I also have been reading them and the concern they had for the Church way back in the 1800's as far as they seen it was starting to sway.and a lot of there point was that we do not spend enough time in our quite place alone with God calling upon his name. I took a peek at your bio and seen you like to read, if I might suggest a few.

I think you mean 'whoever shall call upon his name shall be saved'. Well hypothetically if the bible is 100%correct then yes. But not in the literal sense, of merely mouthing the name of christ as that would first be absurd and second contradictory to the rest of the bible. Considering the full bible one has to conclude that calling his name doesn't consist merely in yelling his name out, that to truly call upon his name several other criteria have to be met- perhaps the living of a good life, repentance etc

    [1:1]

    Romans 10:13 (also)

    - Ezekiel 18: 25-27

do not confuse Jesus Christ with Jehovah. As i am not you, and you are not me... neigh... neither is the Son the Father.

    The LORD is the Father.

The Lord is the Son... except where it specifically is referring to the LORD. They are one in the Spirit of Love.

    Remember the Lords' Prayer...

    as we are in Christ...

    we can say 'Our Father'.

We are one with Christ as Christ is one with God. (insha'Allah)

Yes, absolutely, we need to keep calling His name whenever we need Him, anytime, anywhere. It's so simple and it makes a lot of sense. If I want to get your attention, all I need to do is call 'Sandy'. It's the same with the Lord, we just need to call upon Him name when we need Him

  • 1 decade ago

Absolutely, what the word calling means is like a plural thing

    means continous ,

Called implies you called (singular) in use

The father wants us to call on him for guidience all ways so we do his will and this in the end always benefits us.

    Shalom

Yes! We are to call him name in Praise and Thanksgiving, as we begin and end our day. When we are in pain, filled with fear, tears, and/or content with the day we should call upon him and communion with him daily. It really warms his heart to know that we are thinking about him.
