My betta has had a degree of fin rot - Can I use LifeGuard if I used Maracyn for the last couple of days?
My betta has had a degree of fin rot for several weeks. I've been treating with Maracyn and though for several days lately I noticed no change at all (which was an improvement from it getting worse).. I have now noticed some fin rot on his top fin and an area of his back fin turning that reddish-brown color again... like we are about to start all over again. I did a water change on Sunday and have used Maracyn that morning and this morning. I bought some LifeGuard to try tonight and I was just wondering if it would be okay to put it in, or if I need to change out the water first in case the two medications could react?
What do you think? Help asap would be great.
I am aware of what causes fin rot and yes I'm noticing that maracyn isn't the right medication to use... but on the package it said it was. Then i got it home, opened it up, and it said to get maracyn2. What the heck. My betta is in a 6.5 gallon tank, and it is very clean though it was not clean for two days when we moved and that's when this happened. my question was about using one medication after using the other, thanks to you that answered it.

Maracyn (1) is not a good choice for fin rot-- it is gram positive effective (erythromycin) against the gram negative fin rot infection. I would quit the Maracyn treatment and start with Maracyn TC, Maracyn 2, Triple Sulfa, or Trisulfa instead. Also, be sure you removed any activated carbon from the filter, as it will draw medication from the water.
LifeGuard could work, but I'm not a fan of all-in-one treatments, as they quickly produce resistant strains of bacteria.
EDIT: Maracyn and Maracyn 2 are often recommended in conjunction (I recommend the combination fairly often) as erythromycin has ~some~ efficacy against gram negative bacteria, but definitely not enough to warrant it as a sole medication for treating them, in my opinion.

The marycin medication looses effect after about a day (24hrs) so dont think that you are over dozing. But i would change the water though because the water is probably yellow right?
i cured fin rot with an antibiotic called tetracycline. And here are some tips.
try to use aged water (to do water changes)
try not to change the water 100%
try to get a reasonably sized tank if it doesnt already have one
use "stress coat" water conditioner
add aquarium salt to your tank.
you will not see immediate improvement right away, it iwill take several months before the fins grow back.
good luck.

i'm a powerful propose of using Hydrogen Peroxide in Aquaria. It keeps your tanks algae unfastened and it could help with bacterial infections like fin rot and what not. even though if, try to be very careful dosing it. it can be a real discomfort to objective to dose it in bowl using fact it is not trouble-free to calculate the top quantity of water you have in there. hence I propose you supply up doing that Maracyn and salt scientific care and water replace for some days using fact that your fish sounds to be very under pressure. For one, Maracyn might properly be very poisonous on your fish and that is a fantasy that salt treatments fin rot. purchase Pimafix or Melafix, that is a organic antibacterial therapy which will treatment your Betta without inflicting considerable injury to him or the plant. something tells me nevertheless which you does not have this difficulty in case you had located that fish in that 2 gallon tank you point out, with a nano filter out and heater. in case you save your Betta in a bowl he will save getting unwell and unwell...

A betta should be in a 5 gallon tank with filter and heater. Fin rot is usually a sign of poor water quality. You'll keep battling it until you get your fish in good conditions.
