Mormons: BYU and beards?

My Mormon pals, why can't men attending BYU grow beards? Lots of famous Mormons had beards, like Brigham Young himself. Why does the dress code at BYU prohibit them? It just seems kind of fascist.

Update:

Mrs. Dave, I'm quite aware what fascist means.

fascist: a person who is dictatorial or has extreme right-wing views

Forcing men to shave seems to be dictating policy to me, thus meeting the accepted definition for fascist behavior.

dress code...you can grow a killer mustache though. the look is clean cut, and you should be careful how you use fascist because nearly all government officials, CEOs, soldiers, sports teams etc etc etc share the no beard policy

    not a big deal

**ps...that doesnt "meet" the terms of fascism any more than "forcing" someone to have a library card in order to check out books. You arent forced to go to the school, you wont ever go to the school so what is the real problem? did you get beat up by a clean shaved mormon as a child?

If you don't like the rules, don't go there! It is the rule of the university, and there is nothing you can do to change it, just because you think it is not reasonable.

By the way, the former LDS leaders who wore beards, were doing so in completely different times, and they were more fashionable then. Today, they are not. Don't try changing the present by bringing up the past, it is never a plausable response. Go to the BYU.org website, and ask a question about why this is a policy. If you are not satisfied with the answer, apply elsewhere!

They may say that it's part of their dress code, but that is one of the things that isn't totally enforced. I have seen many guys there that had goatees and beards. I used to drive right through campus to get to work.

They don't realise the effect that "clean-cut" look has on people. It's supposed to be a positive image but it creeps me right out because I don't have short-haired, clean-shaven people who wear ties much in my social circles. It's an unfamiliar - "foreign" image. But maybe they don't want recruits from out here on the fringes of society.

I don't really know. I guess if you want to go there, you have to shave. However, if you don't want to shave, then you can go somewhere else. That seems reasonable. I didn't know beards were anti-fascist? Humm.

It is just for the purpose of good high gean and to look more presentable. It creates a better image.

Not sure. Maybe a hygiene thing? I've never been to BYU.

That's a bristly question. Maybe they don't want to be mistaken for the Amish

    I don't know.

Please look up the term fascist in the dictionary. Misusing this word simply shows the depth of your ignorance.

Beards are considered to be bad press for Mormons.

One prophet got it into his head that since hippies had beards they presented a bad image, therefore Mormons everywhere had to be clean shaven to prevent presenting a bad image.
