Is a Ph.D from Columbus University as good/recognized as a Ph.D from a more prestigious university?
A gentleman I know recieved his Ph.D through Columbus University because he is working, is a husband and father, and has no time to attend classes to teach, etc. The Ph.D is in Computer Science and he got A's on all his 5 papers, as well as on his dissertation. So is he not a recognized "Dr."? He himself does not hold it in much esteem because it was done thorough written correspondence, but he got As on all 5 papers as well as on his dissertation. Shouldn't he be proud and not feel inferior to those who had the advantage of attending a well known university to get their Ph.Ds!? (I mean he does not even want to tell his colleagues because of this perception he has! But he's brilliant, and yeah he undertook this at the age of 52 so he's not looking to get into like a university or something.)

If you receive a Ph.D. from any accredited school, it is just as good and just as recognized as any school. It does not matter if it was through written correspondence, online, or at a ground school. As long as he did the work, and the college is accredited, it's just as good as any.

It is not an accredited university. Therefore, it isn't even a real PhD.
There are accredited universities -- like University of Phoenix -- that offer "real" PhDs. However, even these would not be considered as good as a PhD from a prestigious school.
The quality of the school is more important for PhDs than for any other degree.
As for his age -- why should that stop him? I got my PhD from Berkeley right before I turned 49 -- and have taught at a few prestigious universities since then (MIT, Wharton and Maryland).

I suspect that the first people who answered to not have a PhD -- otherwise they would know that the quality of the school is important.

Any PhD that allows someone to challenge the courses to get out of taking the classes, doesn't appear to have comprehensives (like a regular school), and is a for-profit online university is probably nothing like the equivalent of a PhD from a "regular" university. However, that should not detract from your friend's satisfaction at having done what he did. Most PhDs must do original research that is very rigorous in nature, and these schools just don't require that. Doing it at 52 is very commendable! Be glad for him but don't encourage him to call himself Dr. as it might be embarassing in some situations.

No. Columbus University is not accredited, so while he can call himself whatever he wants, his PhD would not be considered a 'real' degree if he wanted to apply for jobs; claiming it as a real degree may even constitute fraud in some places.
I'm sure you're right, and he's very smart, but the fact is that Columbus doesn't employ anyone who is qualified to judge his work, so it doesn't matter what his grades were.

School matters. Even if a school is accredited, and this one is not, a PhD from a prestigeous school is always worth much more when looking for a job.
