In terms of the whole tournament, yes it was Italy
(the user above justified all the reasons)
despite some controversial refereeing decisions the Italians did well in nearly all matches they played in
They managed to hold on when they had to play with one less man against United States and Australia
They kept their cool when the games are going towards the dying minutes against Germany and France
These are qualities you dont really see in the Italians in the previous 4 World Cups when the team gets eliminated in extra time, three by penalty shootous and the other golden goal
In terms of championing beauty of football, Italy did it in every sense
Lippi bravely decided to abandon the traditional catennacio defending system to attacking
They never concentrated their play on their own half except when they were down to 10 men against Australia, and when they were outplayed against France in the final
Otherwise they went out there to leave their stamp on the field
And to add to the statistic of 10 scorers, all their 5 strikers Toni, Gilardino, Inzaghi, Iaquinta and Del Piero managed to find the back of the net
As did three defenders Materazzi, Grosso and Zambrotta; which resonates the free-flowing football
In terms of the fans, Germany
No doubt about it
The World Cup did not have much quality play in it but we were all overcome by the highly enthusiastic Germans (we got one up there LOL)
Especially in the games involving the German team
(Not to mention also fans from all countries around the world)
But in terms of their play in one particular game, Argentina
The one against Serbia Montenegro
Six great goals
Crespo Messi and Tevez
26-pass goal for Cambiasso's goal
What more can you ask for?

I asked myself all evening yesterday why i don't have favorits but have lots of non-favorits. I seem to enjoy more when some loose rather than when others win. Is that a disease? I am glad Italy and Brazil and Holland and Maradona lost. Spain was a bookies favorite way back in May and they pulled it off. They played well against Germany. Both worth somewhat my favs.

Italy: 1-1 versus USA (USA had a 2nd half goal disallowed and 2 players sent off by an idiot of a referee), 1-0 over Australia on ridiculous 90+ min PK, Late 2-0 winner over Germany in ET
Now, lets look at France: Awful group stage performance, defeated Brasil, Spain, and Portugal in the Knock-Out round.
Even if you don't consider the excessive diving and bad behavior, you can hardly make the case for Italy to be deserving.

the one that won
The only goals they allowed throughout the entire tournament was an own goal and zidanes penalty in the final
They scored 12 goals with 10 different goal scorers
They knocked out the Host team Germany with the most exciting match of the entire competition in a venue where germany had never lost before.
Even with all the drama going on with the managers of their clubs and their former teammate's apparent suicide attempt back in italy, they still kept their spirits high and had the mental strength to keep going. Where as some teams find it difficult to not crack under the pressure of the competition alone.
and for those tempted to bring up the penalty against australia rewind that match and note the ridiculous sending off of materazzi and how italy mananged to still hold australia, even being a man short for a whole 2nd half.....and if you're also tempted to bring up the sending off of zidane in the final minutes of overtime...rewind that match also and note how france were given two huge breaks that could have easily ended the match at the 90 minute mark with a win for italy. (penalty from melouda dive, toni's legit goal disallowed)
The fact is, not everyone is going to be satisfied with a result, but real football fans will give credit where it's due which is something i dont see when it comes to teams like italy. Haters just cling to their flaws (which every team has). italy are deserved winners, and even if u dont think so, history has already been made:)
And well put michele:)

Obviously Italy played well enough to win the World Cup so they deserve it.

I don't know but I wanted Germany to at least reach the final and play against France.
So the answer for me is France or Germany.
