Carpet pads necesary?

i'm installng carpet myself and this sort of carpet usually requires the installation of carpet padding underneath. what would happen if i were to lay the carpet without the padding? i'm just trying to cut costs. the floor underneath is some sort of particle wood.

Carpet padding extends the life of carpet.

Better quality padding is more important than carpet grade. It will last longer and look and feel much nicer!

Do not glue to wood subfloor! That is just bad advice!

Future cleaning would be next to impossible and leave stains from glue and rot out the particle wood.

yes, I was just reading that there is one carpet pad that is really expensive that outlives the life of the carpet. Forget which one, but it's a very rare pad. Generally speaking, the carpet pad goes bad before your carpet and then your carpet starts to take the abuse, which causes wear. So if you are replacing carpet because it's worn out...you need a new pad. And get a good one so your new carpet will last longer. Just remember, a good carpet pad takes the abuse so your carpet doesn't. Your installer should explain to you what the best kind is for you.

Carpet padding will keep you floors warmer in winter, cooler in summer, protects the back of the carpet from wearing out, makes it more comfortable to walk on bare foot, is a sound barrier, and insect barrier and because it you don't put a pad under the carpet you'll probally void the warranty.

    Other than that not much

Steve is right but I want to add 1 thing.. The cost of glue may offset the cost of padding..So why not have the comfort ?Proper stretching is 1 of the most important things in the life of the carpet next to the proper padding.. 5 1/2 # pad is the minimum on most residential type carpet. Check the place your buying it from to check out what will warranty that type of carpet you have bought.. You still may not get any type of warranty if you install it yourself and not a certified installer.. Check which option best fits your needs GL

The pad affects the wear of your carpet as much as the grade of carpet! So do use padding.

if you glue it to the floor, it will actually last longer than if it was on padding and stretched.

its called the direct stick method, its most common in commercial buildings, walkways, stairs and high traffic areas.

just make sure you glue the entire floor, and not just the edges or anything like that.

if you dont glue it down and just roll it out, it will move and wrinkle etc.

the only down side is its harder to pull up when it needs replacing.

a good way of saving money if you can go without the extra comfort !

Your carpet will wear out sooner without padding, not to mention won't feel as nice walking on it.

It would tend to bunch up and wrinkle. You need padding. Even the cheapo pad is better than none.
