Do women need more sleep than men?

In informal data gathering, I noticed that the female population is more like to feel sleep deprived or look forward to sleeping than the male population. Taking out variables like children, work, and chores, do women have a biological need for more sleep than their male counterparts?

    Who cares...

I just answered by question number 1000!

Just kidding. Women actually are better at withstanding levels of stress and pain than men are, so they require less sleep (as they need less recovery time)...however, men tend to take advantage of this fact (go figure) so women do tend to look forward to sleeping in more than men do, just because it's a pleasant interruption in the cycle of craziness.

None that I'm aware of, but it's precisely those variables you mention (kids, work, chores, etc.), that make us look forward to sleeping!

Most men go to work, come home, and consider their day "over" ... they're free to do as they wish until bedtime. They take their "right" to sleep for granted.

Women come home from work and contend with cooking, cleaning, kids, etc., all evening ... and THEN they're "off" for the day ...

But not really. WHO gets up during the night if a kid is sick or has a bad dream?

Most women are never really "off the clock" and when the kids are young, we NEVER get a full night's sleep!
