Why do churches speak in tongues together?

In my church, as in several other churches I've been to, the whole congregation will speak in tongues together. I don't understand why they do this, as to me it seems against the Bible in 1 Corinthians when it talks about order and says that one person should speak in tongues and then someone should give the interpretation, and also that if a non-believer came into the church when everyone was speaking in tongues, they wouldn't understand & might think the congregation were mad.

I'm just asking this so someone can explain why they think it happens. No silly answers please.

Because they have not rightly divided the scriptures and they let tradition guide them.

It should be correctly done as follows:

Speaking in tongues in private prayer life, no interpretation necesary. When alone is ok. Have done so in front of others when teaching them to do so or in confidence building sessions.

Speaking in tongues in the church, by one person at a time and that person brings forth the interpretation. Not all together. Corinthians is a reproof epistle because the people had not correctly adhered to the doctrine of romans. Galations is the correctional epistle that goes with it.

But people do not rightly divide the scriptures and so they do not read it properly. They think that everyone speaks in tongues together and that there is one person with the 'gift' of interpretation. This goes against the scriptures in many ways.

    Hi Claude,

I have answered many q's about tongues, usually quite long and detailed b/c i want people to receive everything God has for them.

To keep it short buddy r has given you a great answer interpreted from the Holy Bible extremely well -- It's long, but he knows there are 2 types of tongues and the reasons for them.

One is for speaking to Almighty God as in a heavenly language, in prayer, praise, or worship - and the other is when God gives a word to the church, and then s/one interprets.

I believe 1 COR 14 says it's a *heavenly* language - who wouldn't want to speak to the Lord God in such a beautiful way..

    God bless ; )

    EDIT:

Can i add , buddy's 2nd last paragraph about water baptism is his interpretation - i'm not agreeing totally with it -- but i agree completely with his interpretation of tongues....

There's nothing to be scared of when the Holy Spirit gives you the gift of tongues.

I go to a Pentecostal church, they also speak in tongues all together but i beleave that each person is saying something different then the other person so if you folllow me its kinda like they are all praying seperatly and lifting up praises to God at the same time.

    Hope this helps

I am not sure why these people do this, it is crazy and strange.

When the apostles received the Holy Ghost at Pentecost they were able to converse with people of many different languages through the gift of tongues bestowed on them by the Holy Ghost. I believe this is the only documented instance of people actually speaking in tongues for the many to understand. What is done today in these strange churches is not the gift bestowed on the Apostles in order for them to spread the good news but gibberish.

I don't believe in this speaking in tongues business. It scares me because I nearly got dragged into a church group that believed in that kind of practise. I actually faked it and they thought I was speaking in tongues with them, so I'm sceptical about this kind of practise regarding Christianity. I think that other Christians are genuine, just not this kind. Sorry.

look the be conscious tongues up interior the Greek so which you will comprehend what it skill. you will see that it incredibly is a language. It became into unknown to those around by way of fact they did no longer talk it. with a view to speak in tongues is like conversing Spanish, English, etc. So why do you will possibly be able to desire to speak this. the human beings in acts have not won the Holy Spirit, by way of fact he hadn't come yet, untill the commencing up of acts. those human beings became into saved and baptized yet like I pronounced the Holy Spirit hadn't come yet. So the evidence they had receieved the Holy Spirit became into conversing in a language they have in no way spoken in. Edit: In Acts 19:a million-6- Paul asked those specific disciples in the event that they had won the Holy Ghost considering that they have been saved. they have not heard of the Holy Spirit. They informed Paul they became into baptized with the help of John the Baptist. John baptized the baptism of repentence. examine a majority of those verses. So see those men have been saved, in simple terms they had no longer won the Holy Spirit by way of fact the Holy Spirit had no longer come till Acts 2. So the sign letting Paul comprehend that they won the Holy Spirit became into tongues, {languages} on the instant we are baptized interior the call of our Lord Jesus Christ, and after salvation we receive the Holy Spirit top then. in case you have anymore question, please digital mail me each time. God bless.

Please read, I have said things valuable, nothing useless, so it is worth reading, despite its length:

They do not understand the purpose of tongues. The purpose of tongues is to build up your own spirit; as you speak in tongues the Holy Spirit places visions, words, guidance in your spirit. It tells us (1 Cor 14) that my mind is unfruitful. That means I need to concentrate inside of myself to be sensitive to how the Holy Spirit is moving my heart, and possibly to interpret the tongue (because tongues and interpretation go hand in hand.)

You see, most Pentecostals don't do that, they just babble, unfortunately. It does NOT please the Holy Spirit to have people abuse His sacred gifts, and by using the utterance of tongues for its ordained purpose you do not quench the Spirit.

More importantly, Pentecostals in general do not know who the Holy Spirit is.

The purpose of the Holy Spirit is not simply to administer gifts, and the most important gift is not tongues.

The Holy Spirit has seven distinct functions.

    Truth: John 15

    Fruit: Gal 5:22=>

Ministry: (of which a portion is gifts) 1 Cor 12

    Intercession: Rom 8

Adoption and covenant (He is the seal of the covenant of God in our lives, and he testifies in our hearts that we are the children of God.) Rom 15-17

Conviction and judgment: John 15 (and other places)

Unity and restoration (He binds us together with love; this was also evident in the Elijah move that preceded the coming of Christ, turning the hearts of the fathers to the children, etc.)

So, of the purpose of the Spirit, only one seventh is ministry, and of ministry only a portion is gifts (let's say half) and two of the gifts are tongues.

That means only 1/ 63 of the purpose of the Holy Spirit. A way to understand that: about one minute on an analogue clock.

That shows you how much prominence tongues (and its interpretation).

The gifts, to me, are not the most important aspect of the Holy Spirit's purpose. Connecting us with the Father, as our intercessor, is more important. The evidence of being filled with the Spirit is the fruit of the Spirit in our lives, not tongues. Tongues is only the evidence of Spirit baptism; we need to be actively filled with the Spirit on a continual basis.

Hope that answers your question. :-)

They are are sent mad but the inane babbling from the pulpit. The human brain just knows this is wrong but is driven insane by the effort to believe and confirm.

Why not just ask in your church - seems they are the best ones to answer your question.

One conservative preacher put it this way- its called "charismatic chaos".

It is definitely out of order. Any church or Christian involved in this type of behavior is on the wrong road.
