What is your opinion on baking/cooking in a electric or gas oven/stove?
For me, the electric oven and stove has been doing it's job to perfection as appose to a gas oven and stove. What are your thoughts and results with either one? Agree or disagree? (I put this question in Seniors because of our experience using both through our lives). Thanks to all.

I prefer gas but that's what I'm used to. Our gas oven/broiler stopped working (probably one of the ignition gizmos and not worth getting it fixed) so we bought an electric convection oven and have been broiling/baking in there but I do miss the gas oven/broiler. And our utility bill has gone up (electric is slightly more expensive than gas). My mom has electric and it takes longer for the coils to heat up so getting the kettle to boil takes a long time (I bought her an electric kettle but she refuses to use it). While checking out kitchen furnishings once I asked a salesperson why they always recommend electric for older people and he said it's to lessen the possibility that they'll catch their clothing on fire.

I have owned both electric and gas cook stoves. I will pick the gas stove over a electric stove any day. Both of them had a boiler in the bottom. With gas you can regulate the heat that you want in an instanced. If your power goes out you can still cook and in a pinch, if you source of heat is electric, you can heat your house (at least a room) with you gas cook stove. I have had better luck baking in a gas oven than in an electric one. I have had the heating elements burn out on the electric stoves as well. I have been shocked by an electric stove a few times when something went wrong.

As far as the ovens go, I much prefer an electric oven over a gas oven. It's a much more even heat and your baking comes out better. Now as far as the surface cooking, I think it's a toss up anymore. The newer electric stoves heat up much quicker than they used to which is where gas had the advantage.
When I bought new I bought the ceramic top electic oven type and just love it! It does wonderful with simmering stock, soup or spagetti sauce low and slow but will still deliver good heat for searing or browning meats. And the ceramic top is sooo much easier to keep clean!

My Mom used the gas oven , but since I been married I have use a electric and I like it much better, But I guess it depends on what a person is used to. I had an elderly aunt that did all her baking and cooking in a wood burning stove, Her husband and kids got together got rid of the wood burning stove and bought her new modern gas range, She hated it, They went Every where trying to find a wood stove , finally found one. Now she has them both, does cooking on top of the stove on the gas range and her baking in the wood stove. ================================================================= Edit She baked the best , bread , cakes and pasties, She isn't with us anymore. but everyone remember her and her baking.

Having had both , I prefer an electric oven. If something boils over on a gas burner it can put out the flame and fill the kitchen with gas fumes, of course the electric burner gets much hotter and can burn up the pot fast. I am very sensitive to the slight oder of gas...

I prefer an electric oven and a gas cook top. Electric ovens cook more evenly. The heat distribution is better. However, gas is better for the cook top because you have more control over how high or low the heat is.

I like gas, hands down! You can manually adjust the flame and the pots we have today are geared for gas stoves. I also feel in better control of a gas stove. You can also use them during the winter when it's cold. :-) Plus, have you ever tried to light a cig on an electric stove?! Well...wait...! I don't smoke. And you shouldn't either! just kidding. ;o)

I'm stuck with electric. I prefer gas. Watch any cooking show on TV and the only type used by chefs is gas. I have yet to go to any restaurant and see food cooked on an electric range.

I have a gas stove and I like it as far as heating quickly but to simmer I wish I had my old electric stove- It sounds like maybe I ought to check out the stove top like mentioned above

i know that gas ovens are suppose to be better and cook more evenly...but i have to say that i really miss my electric stove!! for one...my broiler is seperate from the oven with my gas. with my electric i had the broiler on the inside of my oven on the top....i really miss that since i cook slightly different than most people lol. i like to flip on the broiler to get that extra crisp on the top of certain foods. also...my food seems to cook faster and differently on the gas stove top...nothing is the same!! i hate it lol
