Republicans and democrats..did you belong to opposite parties in the 90's?

Bill Clinton and the dems tried to pass warrant less wiretapping bills and patriot act like measures in the 90's and the republicans were up in arms saying how that violates the constitution.

But now that it is Bush pushing for them the same things are now A-OK with the republicans and not okay with the democrats. What gives?

Grassroots democrats: Were you against your own party in the 90's?

Grassroots republicans: Where you against your own party in the 90's?

Valid question considering the parties have completely switched stances on a lot of things and also why many laugh when people say that Obama or McCain will be different.

Update:

Steve M - yeah the republicans are really good at not raising taxes, they would rather borrow trillions and let my grandchildrens taxes be raised to pay off the breaks we enjoy today

I am anti-tax myself but I am also anti-debt, thats why I am against the 2 party system.

Update 2:

Also Steve - Bush has given us no welfare reform, only made it worse. Clinton actually reformed the system. So yes! ALOT OF THINGS. I am anti-welfare also.

    Very interesting to know.

In the 90s, I was a republican but really an independent because I look at the issues and the people as best I could.

Now, I consider myself a democrat but I still look at the issues and people as best as I can. I talk to other people to get their views too.

Never trust a politican or any party. There aren't really stark differences between republicans and democrats. I think that's a major problem. Corporations give money to both groups. What I find funny is that I read an article that made a good case about Wal-Mart voting against its own interests by voting Republican. I believe it was on businessweek.com.

12 years of Republican rule of Congress resulted in 06. In 2007 Democrats pulled off a slender majority - that is suggested as a plurality because of the fact they have not got sufficient votes on their very own with bi-partisan help. For the main area the GOP in basic terms filibustered each and every thing the Dems tried to do. For some reason many Republicans think of that's "sturdy" government while the GOP does it and "undesirable" while the Dems do it (uncommon)... each and all the regulations and rules that have been put in place after the final super melancholy to guard us from a financial meltdown have been repealed by potential of the Republicans! Many regulations have been handed that secure companies from their misdeeds. there have been additionally Dems that voted for a number of those stupid deregulations. they ought to bypass, too.

I actually was a Democrat in the 90's of course I was fresh out of High School and didn't really have a clue. I was against wiretapping then cause I was afraid of getting caught doing what I liked to do best. I still don't like the idea but I do believe it is necessary.

AS you grow up and grow wiser you tend to grow Conservative. I was a democrat until I got out on my own and started paying taxes and making my own living. I saw that was a stupid party to be in then I was a republican well that wasnt the best thing either so I just pick the best candidate. this is the first year in my 42 years that I have to vote against a candidate rather that for one.

They have not switched stances on "a lot of things". I was a democrat in the 70's and finally woke up from my deep sleep in the 80's when I started paying taxes and found out that the democrats kept wanting to take more of my hard earned money and give it to unproductive losers in this country.

I think more people think wire tapping bills and patriot act are only for terrorist and since the media has everyone scared of terrorists they go along with the lie. They dont realize they are loosing their freedoms.

"We’re pushing the idea that we ought to pursue a broad-based legislative attack on all aspects of the Bush-era assault on the Constitution. We have a perfect vehicle to use for this approach, Congressman Ron Paul’s “American Freedom Agenda Act.” This bill was created by a number of progressive and conservative organizations and introduced by Ron Paul. This bill would . . .

    * Repeal the “Military Commissions Act of 2006” and thereby restore the ancient right of habeas corpus and end legally sanctioned torture by U.S. government agents

    * Restore the ”Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act” (FISA) and thereby outlaw warrantless spying on American citizens by the President of the United States

    * Give Congress standing in court to challenge the President’s use of “signing statements” as a means to avoid executing the nation’s laws

    * Make it illegal for government agents to kidnap people and send them abroad to be tortured by foreign governments

    * Provide legal protection to journalists who expose wrong-doing by the Federal government

    * Prohibit the use of secret evidence to label groups or individuals as terrorists for the purpose of criminal or civil sanctions

We’re contemplating a number of new tactics to push this bill forward. These tactics would serve to put Congress on the spot, much as Governor Schweitzer put Secretary Chertoff on the spot. But the first step is to start a steady drumbeat of messages hammering members of Congress to become co-sponsors of the “American Freedom Agenda Act.”

Please start that drumbeat today, by sending your elected representatives a message.

Republicans are dumb! Except a few like Roosevelt! He stood up to the rich and told them their not running this country but the US citizens. Bill Clinton is a dumb @ss for signing that free trade deal! China will have sweetshop in our nation in a few years. Any It matters on the policies. I would rather have Obama because McCain doesn't know how to fix our economy!

If this were the most important issue to me then I would switch parties over it, but it's not. Neither is abortion, so though I'm pro-choice, I'm a republican because other issues, such as gun rights have greater importance to me.

I've been an independent for many years, and your point is well taken. An issue can magically become cool depending on the party in power.

Clinton never pushed for warrantless wiretaps...

Everything he pushed has judicial review and oversight

Bush is data mining, taking ALL information from phone calls and web traffic and putting it in a database. He cut the courts out entirely
