Shock Collars on Dogs?
Why does everybody here make a big deal about shock collars?
Yes, I HAVE BEEN SHOCKED BY ONE BEFORE, on the highest level, and it felt like when your arm goes to sleep and you move it again.
If you are against shock collars, are you also against invisible fences? Invisible fences use the same sort of technology.

I am not against shock collars...people who unequivocally oppose them are simply ignorant. They don't understand them. I don't think that idiots should use them-I have seen many a good prospect ruined by them, but then again, those kinds of dog owners will either ruin their dog with the shock collar or with screaming at them and confusing them.
Simply put, shock collars are for people who know how to use them to TRAIN, not punish. People who zap their dog indiscriminately because they're too lazy to learn how to train shouldn't have them.
EDIT: As I said, most people who oppose shock collars are IGNORANT TO THEIR PROPER USE---a good trainer would never use a collar to punish a dog. Candace (and others), I suggest doing some research before spouting off your opinions. Experts agree they can be an invaluable tool...I'm guessing those that oppose them have never actually seen or used one (or felt the shock themselves).

Not everybody is but you should really try and just train your dog not to bark all the time. I understand that with some dogs though training is impossible and yes shock collars are the better solution. However be careful because some collars shock your dog when another dog barks thats close to your dog and thats just mean! And to your comment about youself being shocked- you have to think its on the dogs neck not arm and dogs are more sensitive to things like that pluss when you dont know its comming yes it can hurt because when you are intecepating the shock your adrenaline builds up and you dont feel the shock as much....But yes I get your point some dogs just need them..

i do no longer comprehend as though i could difficulty with an electric collar for coaching a puppy/domicile dogs, yet for coaching stepped forward skills the adjustments between with and without the electrical powered collar are gentle years aside. That difference will become obvious while the dogs is as much as a 0.5 mile faraway from the coach and the coach could make a correction as though the dogs replaced into suitable by using his area and on lead. quote " use a physique harness an mussle" the assumption with an electric collar is to your physique harness and muscle and the collar to intend precisely the comparable component to the dogs. to be certain that that to take place the severity of corrections might desire to be matched between the two. So one is not extra merciless than the different.

Im not against the use of regular shock collars so long as they are used correctly. And by correctly i mean the right size, voltage/level, etc for your individual dog AND you as the owner are trained to use one. They work wonders on some dogs, i've seen it.
Invisible fences i AM against because they simply don't work on most dogs. They don't keep your yard secure (people/animals can come right in), some dogs blast through them, they can fail and you wouldn't know until the dog gets hit by a car, etc.

Leigh's answer is spot on. Electric collars can be used cruelly, but so can a flat collar for that matter. When used properly, electric collars are a wonderful tool but too many people have no idea how to use them the right way and think they just strap it on their dog and start shocking it for every little thing.
I don't think morons should use them but I also don't think they should be villainized either as it's the person using it that determines if it is humane or not.

Shock collars are a cruel way to so called "train" your dog. By shocking the dog while it is misbehaving is completely unethical. You are just training the dog to be afraid to do something not so much teaching him the right and wrong. Why would someone want to have shock control over an animal is beyond me. There are much better and safe ways to train a dog, ie clicker training. Yes invisible fences use the same technology, so i am obviously against them as well.

I honestly don't think they're necessary or even a good way to train your dog. Both shock collars and invisible fences are illegal here (Denmark) and we have no problem training our dogs without them.
I think it's recommendable that you tried the shock collar on yourself, but it would be even more so if you'd strapped it around your neck instead of your arm.

Shock collars, and any other form of abuse to train a dog is for lazy people, who are too ignorant to have dogs in the first place. Shock collars, cropping, and docking are archaic and should be made illegal in the US, like it is for much, or all (I think) of Europe.

Yes, definitely against both. Would've thought that was obvious.
Whooopee so you didn't mind being shocked. Are you a dog?
Why would anyone want to train their dog using this method anyway? What's so wrong with non-painful methods or even *gasp* non-punishment methods? Aversion is a crap training method anyway.
