How would one have traveled from New york to Chicago by streetcar?

Every once in a while, I will hear people mention that, once upon a time, one could travel from New York to Chicago entirely by streetcars. Not one of them, however, could mention the route and connections involved.

Do any of you have more information on this?

It would NOT have been on a single street car line because street cars have ALWAYS been local and LIGHT RAIL. Perhaps around the turn of the Century it may have been possible... but you would have to use "Street Car" VERY loosely. I have never heard this and I seriously doubt it's true
