College Essay & Special Characters?

I wrote my college application essay for UF. When I went to post it on their site, all my quotation marks and apostrophes show up as little boxes. It did say to avoid special characters such as underlined, bold, italics, and quotes.

I was told that quotes are what help to make your topic specific and are a good idea. Is there a better way to write quotes without quotation marks? Or does it not really matter, will they be able to understand what it means? Also, all my contraction words such as "don't" and "they'll" show up with boxes in between. Do I need to write it out as Do not and they will?

Write your essay in word, then copy and paste it into the application. All the extra characters will then show up.

It is more formal not to use contractions, so it would be better to write 'cannot' and do not.
