What do you think of this colt?

Yuck yuck yuck!!!!!!!

I read everyones posts before I looked at the pictures, now I know what you are all going on about. Horriffic, jusy awful, the poor thing. The place looks like a dump, a foal factory, whatever, I feel for all of the horses there, not just the foal. The horses look board out of their brains the poor things.

Its cuteness 10, Its poor conformation 1, well actually I will give it a 2, it could have been born with its head on backwards!!!

What do you do with a horse like this???

Are they going to keep it or put it down? Thats realy sad. Its going to live in pain all its life if they keep it. If its lucky it may grow into those legs, but, gee wiz, it just looks backwards or something, and I'm a pretty good judge of conformation.

I'm going to be completely honest, I don't work head-on with foals very often at all, but something about this one makes me feel as if he doesn't have the best conformation...at all. Especially in that second pic. He looks like he has an angled back, and his little pastern seems to also be angled strangely (it looks so foreign!). I understand that foals' legs and stuff tend to be a little out of proportion so that they grow into him, but it looks like he was pieced together to me... with some especially disliked pieces too. Being a foal, I could never say that I don't like him, but I wouldn't call him a very prospective young horse...scratch that, I doubt he'll have an easy future.

I'd give him maybe a 4...again, I have very little experience in this area.

EDIT: You know, after looking at that second pic again, his stifle and hocks seem to just WAY out of proportion to the rest of him as well, so I'm dropping to a 2...maybe even a 1...definitely a 1...poor little guy :-(

Well, it has been my experience that foals need a little time to be up and around before you can really determine what is going on with their conformation and angulation. I have seen camped out rear confirmation like this before on TWH colts.

Judging from the dam however, this is not a walking horse colt.

With that said, I would be concerned with his weak hindquarter, overly camped out hocks and long pasterns, as he is now, I would rate him a 2.

- BUT -

I would like to see him again at 6 months and at 1 year to give you my true opinion.

What breed it this?

I can't rate him. I don't know what breed he is, how old he is, or any of that important info. Foals are constantly growing and changing shape and size, which doesn't exactly help. However the first thing I noticed was the quite obvious conformational flaws. His butt slants down too low, his hocks jut out, and his pasterns are grossly bent. His mom appears to be the exact opposite...slightly butt high, slightly raised pasterns, and possibly cow hocks. At the current time I would only give a 2 or 3 conformationwise.

First notice...I don't like the dropped rear pasterns...but I know that they will 'straighten up' and strengthen in a few days if they are going to. Until they started to look like they were improving with a day or two...I would be watching and anxious.

I am clueless on a number scale...but if I saw this...I wouldn't like it at first look. So...JUST by the fetlocks...I say 2. If they were to straighten up...the number would go higher...maybe

And was it crossed with a draft horse???

In my opinion his front is to tall for his back but he will most likely grow into it. He isn't the nicest baby I have seen but he is cute I give him a 7.

EDIT: Taking a second look at the pictures it looks as if the colts right back leg (looking at it from the butt) hurts him. It seems as if in every picture he has it up like it hurts. I would call a veterinarian out to check on him and the mare.

This is sad...Poor guy looks he was sired by a kangaroo with those hind legs.

Not to answer a question with a question but, is that what DSLD or dropped fetlocks is? Just curious.

Those seem like some major faults..I never outgew some of mine. I only hope he does. Hard to look at.
