I'm currently living in Wyoming (have been here for 7 years) on a couple acres with 2 horses, 3 dogs, and my wonderful husband (he comes last because he takes up the least of my time, believe it or not). I grew up riding the hunter-jumper circuit but got bored with that and disheartened by the show world, so I moved on to other things. I went to college in Colorado, and continued riding there. I've done a little bit of everything (polo, gaming, dressage, drill teams, reining, team penning, etc.), and can't pick one particular discipline that I prefer. I like it all...which is fine because it makes me and my horses well rounded. I've come to enjoy training horses as much as I enjoy training people. I used to be a certified riding instructor, but my certification ran out long ago, although I still give lessons here and there to those who are willing.

  • For Greg B and paintgirl_h?

Sorry, I know this is annoying, but I need Greg B and paintgirl_h to email me if they see this. And since their profiles don't allow email, I had to make an announcement.

And as for a question...which is your favorite movie/tv horse character of all time? It can be a real horse or a cartoon character, doesn't matter.

  • Dare cribbing collar?

Has anyone tried one of the Dare cribbing collars on their horse? I'm curious to know if they are worth the money. I currently use a french cribbing collar but it rubs a bit so if I can get something that you don't have to tighten up so much, as the Dare ones claim, that would be great.

  • Olympics--NOT about scheduling :)

Which Olympic events are you guys watching besides the equestrian events?

I'm enjoying the swimming (yeah, I'm a Phelps phan), diving, gymnatics (women's), beach volleyball, and waiting for track & field to start.

  • What age do you consider to be old for a horse?

I know, I know, it depends on the individual. I have an 18 y.o. that still jumps. But then a friend has a 17 y.o. that is so crippled with arthritis that she can never be ridden again.

I just wanted to know in general, at what age do you consider a horse old?

  • Nail strengthening supplements?

I have a dog who splits his toenails on a regular basis. They open up all the way so that the quick is completely exposed. It seems to be pretty painful for him and of course it takes a long time for that quick to toughen up so it's a real nightmare for him that I'd like to help.

Anyway, I went to the vet (a new one I went to the other day that I didn't particularly care for) and asked if I could give him something like biotin to strengthen his nails and she just said she didn't know. Not helpful. I know horses and people can have biotin to strengthen nails/hooves, but I wasn't sure about dogs. Anyone have any idea if I can give him biotin, or if not, what else may help? I haven't been able to find any supplements on the market particularly for nails.

He hasn't had any diet changes, his nails are kept short, he's just done this all his life (he's 10 now). He just has naturally weak nails. :(

  • National Rescue Ride

Anyone participating in a National Rescue Ride?

    http://www.nationalrescueride.org/

Today was the first I'd even heard of this, and I think it's a fantastic thing, but unfortunately there are none happening within 300 miles of me. People on this forum talk all the time about what they can do to help horses, so here is a very pro-active thing to do! It's better than just giving advice over the computer...LOL! Now I think I better put my money where my mouth is and sponsor someone who IS riding!

I know this isn't really a question, I was really just trying to spread info about this, but I really would like to know who is participating because I'd like to see how much publicity this is getting and if it will therefore be successful.

  • Woohoo! Part of the club!

Yay! I'm finally part of the club...I got my first hate mail today. Ahh, Yahoo Answers, you make my life complete, filling it hate and ignorance.

Although I encounter that in real life too. Some guy turned his horses out on the state land next to our place and left them in 95 degree heat for two days without water. Awesome. I hauled them water and called the sherriff but because I live in the middle of nowhere, there isn't much in the way of animal rights/animal control, so no one has done anything. This is the FOURTH time I've report someone for horse cruelty in the past 3 years.

So to make this an official question, does anyone else find themselves doing this too? Reporting their neighbors for neglect? Normally I don't stick my nose in other people's business but when their horses are trying to push down the fence to get to my water, or when a 5 month old dies of starvation on the property line, I don't really have a choice...

I'm HOPING that I find this neglect is not so common in everyone else's neighborhood.

By the way Jesse M, I hope you're having a WONDERFUL day.

  • Rattlesnakes?

I just found a BIG rattlesnake in my barn. Fantastic. I've never even seen rattlers near our property before so that's disturbing. I got about 3 feet from the sucker before he even rattled. And even then I thought it was the hose! I HATE snakes (sorry to all you snake lovers. I am just really scared of them and find them to be creepy).

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had an idea of how to control rattlesnakes on my property. I have a barn cat, but she wanders a lot, and this snake was too big for her anyway. Any other rattlesnake deterrents anyone uses or is aware of? ANY idea would be great.

    Thanks.

P.S. That snake has been dead for 15 minutes and my husband is down there trying to measure at him and it's still curling up and striking at him...even though it's HEADLESS! Creepy little nasty creatures. I know they eat rodents but I'd rather have mice. They are easier to deal with! And they die instantly...LOL

  • Help, important horse questions!?

How can I convince my parents to buy me a horse?

    What should I name it?

Tell me everything you can about owning a horse and EXACTLY what I'll need for one.

    What do horses eat?

I think I'll get a yearling, doesn't that sound great?

Do you like my horse, do you think it's pretty?

Why does my horse keep kicking me?

Why does my horse keep running me over?

Help me make him quit bucking!

The bottom half of my horse's leg is missing and he is bleeding profusely--what should I do? (I'm not taking him to the vet so don't even suggest that...)

Oh yeah, and what the the answers to Level 1 Howrse?

    Thanks.

    SIGH.

  • Bit shanks (Myler bits)--flat versus HBT?

I'm trying to buy a new (western) bit. I know which mouthpiece I want, but I don't know which shanks style.

The one I want is a Myler, with 5 inch shanks, but they offer several shank options with the mouthpiece I want. Myler offers a flat shank and an HBT shank. I don't know what HBT stands for, maybe that would help, but I couldn't seem to dig that up.

So essentially my questions are: what is Myler's HBT shank? Visually, it is round as opposed to flat, but what is the difference in function between this and a flat shank?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Please critique my riding position. I have been riding horses for 18 years, yet I still feel like I'm always leaning too far forward. I'm just not sure how to fix it...
