Is it necessary to have your cesspool/septic system serviced regularly?
We've asked around, but haven't found anyone, so far, who has their tanks drained. However, all of us use Cess-Flo, or a similar product, as often as is recommended on the package. Is this adequate? A few other things you may need to know: we have two tanks, we are a family of three, and we don't use excessive amounts of water. We recently had a "major plumbing service company" do an unrelated repair and then try to convince us that it's necessary to service the septic system every 2-4 years. We are just wondering if it's true, or if they were simply trying to sell us another service. Thanks for your help!

I have had a septic system for 10 years and have never had it flushed or maintained. We throw very little paper in the toilet and have a water saver toilet. Most people who live around me have septic systems and do not have the system flushed until the system starts to become sluggish. The average septic system here in Northern Michigan needs flushing out every 5 to 10 years. As long as you are practicing good usage and using your Cess-Flo, you should not have to have a clean up done every 2 to 4 years. The average cost here is $100 for a septic clean out.

Many variables come into this answer. The type of water, other chemicals, the water table in your immediate area, the bacteria in the tanks, the size of the tanks, the leach field etc...
There are times the tanks will have too much and will require a pumping to vacate the wast. It could be that amount of time for your area as it relates to the amount of people in your home...
Check around with other service companies and several local hardware stores to compare information to help you make a sound decision.
IF you wait too long, a more serious problem can occur where the entire field must be dug up and or relocated....

In other circles, there is no product sold that measurably have an effect on the solids building up in a tank. Whom is being sold an unnecessary service? The tank should be pumped at least every four years. It is not that expensive and it will add years to the life of a leaching field. If you want to possibly never have to replace the field in your lifetime put in a effluent filter in the outflow of the septic tank. It filters any little solids that make it through the tank and insure that just water goes to the field.

Oh yes. You need to have the "solids" removed periodically or your tank will fill up or fail to work efficiently. This is not a scam. Probably not every 2 years, but 4 years would be good. Some places require that it be done every so often. The county I live in recommends it, but does not require it. Preventive maintenance is certainly preferred to a sewage problem.

A general rule of thumb is for a family of 5, you should have it pumped every 5 years. Sediment builds up in the bottom. If you don't have it cleaned out often enough it will build up and overflow out into the field lines. If the field lines plug up- you have to put in new lines-very expensive.
Keep it clean and the field lines will last all your life.
I had new lines installed about 8 years ago- it cost me then 5k.

This seems so inexpensive. I wish I had done it every year. Septic people coming soon.
