Why do Christians claim that Wiccans worship the Devil when Wiccans don't believe in the Devil?

Are they liars... or just being told the wrong thing and believing it?

Because this has been the case for over a thousand years. Christianity stems from a mix of previous religions, primarily pagan, which Wicca is. For instance, there are dozens of pagan gods that include in their mythology, the son of god, known as the lamb of god, the messiah, the one, the savior, the way and the light, etc. who was born on dec 25th, died on easter, rose 3 days later, was born of a virgin, birth was fortold by an angel or demigod, was greeted at birth by 3 wise men or magi that found him by following a star bearing gifts of gold, frankincense, and mir, healed the sick and blind, had 12 disciples, told them to eat bread and drink wine for this is my body and this is my blood, etc. etc. etc. the list goes on and on.

Early church leaders were very aware of the similarities between Jesus and pagan gods like Heracles, Mithra, osiris, Dionysus etc. because they were openly accused of copying the older religions. Their explanation is that the devil devised these other religions and gods early on to lead men astray and keep them from accepting Jesus as the one true son of god. This is still the explanation to this day, but the ancient religions have fallen out of public knowledge, so they don't often have to offer any explanation.

To convert those still committed to their pagan gods, the early christians took their symbols, such as the goat and pentagram etc, and taught that they were symbols of Satan. Teaching that anyone worshiping those other gods were worshiping satan's creations.

Christians basically claim that wiccans and other pagans worship the devil to skirt the argument of jesus as recycled myth, and to gain converts and thus, money and power.

I find this problem to only be prominent in the U.S. I am a former Wiccan, now repentant Christian, myself. My Pagan name was Crimson Peaceful Wolf. As both a former Wiccan of 8 years and a Christian at present I think my testimony ought to be taken with something more than a grain of salt. The problem is actually quite simple: Wiccans and Christians don t believe the same things. Asking a question like this is like asking "why does a Muslim think that Christians are not worshipping the one true God"? The answer ought to be quite obvious: Muslims believe the Quran is the fully Divine inspired word of Allah and that the New Testament is religious folklore. Christians believe pretty much the exact opposite. A Wiccan doesn t base their beliefs on a single scriptural text, but there are texts that Wiccan use to help develop their theology, usually written by other Pagans or other Wiccans. The Christian believes that what the Bible says is true, the Wiccan does not trust the words of the Bible. I don t know how else to spell it out. Christians believe that the devil is a real entity, a definite unseen personality banished from the throne room of God to inhabits this earth and cursed to wander "seeking whom he may devour" by deceiving. The devil is referred to as "The Prince of Lies" in a couple of Bible verses. The Wiccan does not have a belief in any personality known as Satan. To the Christian this disbelief in Satan is part of the devil s deception at work. A Wiccan does not believe that they are being deceived by any personality known as Satan or the devil, because they do not believe that such a being exists.

Thank you for not generalizing. You said that some Christians believe that Wiccans worship satan. True. I hope I can explain it in such a fashion as to not offend you. You seem like a gentle person to me. As a Christian, I love you and accept you as a fellow human being. I believe that the reason why some Christians believe that Wiccans worship the devil is because there are only two sources of supernatural power in the universe. There is God, who is the ultimate good. There is satan, who is the ultimate evil. By worshiping nature, or conjuring or contacting "spirits," it would seem to Christians that Wiccans are communicating with demons or evil spirits. So from their point of view, it is an abomination to God. I am completely ignorant of Wicca, to be honest. But I hope my answer made sense. By using 'magic,' or whatever the proper terminology may be, Christians see people using magic as being manipulated or appealing to some malevolent force.

First, the vast majority of Christians have never even heard of Wicca. And no, I'm not talking about the ignorance of the average Christian, I'm talking about the fact that some 93% of all Christians live outside the United States, while the majority of Wiccans live inside the United States.

Second, even in the United States, not all Christians accuse Wiccans of devil worship. That accusation is typically leveled by Evangelicals, fundamentalists and Pentecostals.

Now, for those who do accuse Wiccans of devil worship, they could care less whether or not Wiccans believe in the devil. They maintain that any and all supernatural forces come from one of two sources: God, or the devil. So, they accuse Wiccans of devil worship because most Wiccans claim to tap into some sort of supernatural power without being Christians.

Those FEW Christians that DO believe Wiccans are devil worshippers suffer from the same problem as you; LACK OF KNOWLEDGE.

There may be a small percentage that have that mistaken belief, but your words indicate you believe EVERY Christian believes that. Just goes to show your lack of knowledge on this subject. Which is typical of YOU PEOPLE.

None of the Christians that I know believe that Wiccans are devil worshippers. They're more educated in that than you are in what YOU said.

Thanks for the laugh at your expense.

They're just being told the wrong thing, in much the same way that Protestants are told the wrong things about Catholics and tend to believe it.

I am Catholic. I am a former Pagan. I know that Wiccans and Pagans don't worship the Devil. Satanists worship the Devil.
