Kitchen remodeling... Upper cabinets are in good shape.?

I am thinking of saving the upper cabinets by painting & cleaning it, and I might replace/resurface the doors, but I want to get the new base cabinets, sink, counter tops and the floor. Is it a good idea? The upper cabinets and base cabinets will look different.

As a professional kitchen designer and design journalist, I see this look in numerous projects. I've also designed a few kitchens with different uppers and lowers. The key to success is coordinating the two so that they look good together. Some suggestions for achieving that include:

    >Use colors that complement each other, rather than shades that are close to each other, but not the same.

    >Contemporary kitchens use this look most frequently -- if that style works for your home's overall style*, consider it for your kitchen.

    >If your style is more traditional, consider replacing the hood or crown molding with materials from your new base cabinets' line.

    >Make sure the new countertop looks good with both cabinet colors.

    >Use the same hardware on your uppers and lowers.

    >Coordinate the hardware color to your appliances and faucets.

  • When remodeling a kitchen cabinet design - Usually replacing the wall cabinets happens at the same time as the base cabinets.

When your remodeling is said and done - You will have a lot of work put into painting and cleaning your kitchen cabinets, and replacing or painting the wall cabinets with the base cabinets usually makes the most sense.

When you are remodeling - Portions of your kitchen walls may need repairs, etc... as if you change your mind later then the remodeling will have to start all over. If you do choose to go with this method - Starting with the wall cabinets is advised so you do not damage your new counter top.

With a tight budget, if you are doing the remodeling yourself and do not mind a mess in your kitchen - Go for it! Knowing what you want is the bottom line - Viewing showroom gallery http://www.brandsconstruction.com/CopperminePhotos... collections of cabinet design and counter tops is often a great idea!

All the HG TV show are showing a mix of cabinets. Sometimes the island is different and sometimes it's the upper and lower. I would say as long as they complement each other and don't compete with each other go for it. You might also get the bottom ones and get matching doors for the top. Good luck!
