Are riding lawn mowers failing the green test?
Just purchased a riding lawn mower. Have wanted one of those babies for quite some time and I scrimped and saved for 2 years in order to purchase it. I have a medium sized yard and the walk behind was getting real old.
Now my neighbors are complaining that it is too loud and they want to ban it from the neighborhood. They sent a petition around and even our good friends signed it. They all have electric mowers and said that mine is an abdomination. They've accused me of not being "green." Since when are lawn mowers not green?

Since the global warming crisis began. If I were you, I would be sure to mow your lawn at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday mornings. JK. But seriously, you must live in one of the coastal states or in a very liberal neighborhood. Your neighbors sound like self-righteous jerks. You have my sympathy.

Unfortunately you didn't say what make it is so I'm assuming it's powered with a Briggs and Stratton engine if people are complaining about the noise. Briggs are a noisy operating engine at the best of times. They could have done better with their mufflers. If you were to put a better one on the noise can reduced considerably. Ride-ons usually have a larger diameter blade which does set up lot of noise and you can't do much about that other than to mow with a slower blade speed.
Blade noise is about all you hear from electric mowers but if your yard is of a medium size, electric mowers are a pain.

The only 'green' near a riding mower is the stains from using it. Unles there is a homeowners association, I'd tell them to pack it. The fact that they have electric mowers is neither here or there. If they want you to have an electric mower, tell them to buy one for you.
As for noise, if you use the mower during norman working hours they should not be able to complain. Saturday late morning or early afternoon should be okay, too. I would never use my rider when it is evening meal time, late evening, or any time on Sunday.
Good Luck on your fight.

Metallic....I detect a sence of jealousy here, on the part of your neighbors. No no, it is not the decibels that concerns them, after all, a petrol mower makes as much noise. You metallic, have got one over on them and they don't like it. but you must be cock-a-hoop with your new toy. The tolerable db output for indoors is 98db before you must use ear protection, no problem with these db tolerances outdoors. Who are they going to send the petition to ? The manufactures ?. Listen, it isn't as if you were making a noise for hours on end, talk to them one on one, and I bet you, their objections only apply when they are in "The Pack" few will object to your face. Enjoy your mower

And how, pray tell, is the electricity generated. If you live in an area where coal fired power plants make the electricity, please remind your neighbors that the burning of coal releases MERCURY into the atmosphere. By the way, what kinds of cars are sitting in these people's driveways?
