If parents down the street are unfit parents, does it demean your own parenting?
I'm trying to understand the idea that gay marriage demeans the marriage of a man and a woman.
So, if you are a parent, and someone who is a horrible parent is also a parent, does it undermind YOUR parenting? If so, how? If someone has a marriage that you wouldn't personally choose, how does that undermind YOUR marriage?
Thank you for explaining this to me :)

I'm going to try and see if I can see this perspective -
My first thought is no, seeing an unfit parent tends to make me look at my own parenting and make sure I'm not doing any of the things they are doing. As long as I'm not then I go on assured that I am not the same kind of parent they are. Furthermore, how someone else parents their child doesn't affect my parenting as I am the one raising my kid, not some clown down the street.
The only way I can see some kind of justification is if someone used the "well, it makes us all look bad" routine but that doesn't work because you can choose who you associate with. If you don't want to hang around bad parents or a homosexual family then you don't associate with them. I would never compare homosexuals to bad parents, but for the sake of argument.... and I see where you're going. I've never understood how anyone else's marriage affects mine anyway. I have never received a letter in the mail stating "Donny and Sue Baker got a redneck marriage license so now your marriage is a redneck marriage too. Enjoy and don't forget to put some old appliances out on the front lawn!"

An unfit parent. One who beats a child or lets their new husband or boyfriend beat the child. A parent who will buy herself an expensive designer handbag while her kids wear second hand cloths. A parent who does not care about her kids education or well being such as social life and keeps her kids out of school and calls it homeschooling them while she sits on her computer all day and plays games and then yells at the kids for not getting schoolwork done (a child has the right to a proper education). A parent who uses child support money for her own pleasure such as a vacation fund for herself and her husband while again the kids do without. A parent who is on a vegan diet and refuses to let the children have nutritious meat simply because she doesn't like it and the kids look pale all the time. A parent who doesn't clean house but makes the kids do it while she sits. A parent who leaves young kids at home to care for a newborn while her and her husband go on a joy ride. A parent who knowingly keeps her children away from the other parent just out of spite (children are entitled to know both parents). A parent who has followed through with sucide attempts (at least 2 or more) and has never had treatment for it, such as overdosing on pills (she is a danger to herself and children). These are some things that are neglecting a child. I am sure you know what physical abuse is. Hitting a child in the face, punching a child, beating a child with a belt because he or she has ADHD and acts out and the parent won't use medication for the problem. Burning a child with a cigarette. I can go on and on but this is just to say a few.

It takes a village to raise a child.
If the people down the street are bad parents, there's a reason for it. They need help. When I had my kids, I read every single book on parenting I could, and still, my best resource were my family, friends and neighbors.
I don't give a damn about their sexual orientation.

"50 years ago homosexuality was viewed as an abomination, as pedophilia is at the moment. I bet in the next 50 years everybody will be "For pedophile rights! They are people too!" and against discrimination of them, and will support incestuous marriage because "they aren't hurting each other, and it's love between two consenting adults!"
Damn liberals."
Hang on now. Explain to me how sexual consent between two legal ADULTS is the same as an adult pawing at little CHILDREN?
Also, MARK FOLEY. I don't recall him being a liberal when he was sending dirty e-mails to sixteen year old boys.

You know how it is. If that ugly kid down the street has the same toy you do, your toy is no longer any good. So you have to go smash his toy so your toy is good again. Then you go make a law forbidding ugly kids from getting cool toys, so you don't have to worry about any more ugly kids getting the same toy as you.
It's hard dealing with toddlers, isn't it?

I've always thought that other straight people would be more of a threat to my marriage than gay people. But hey, that's just me.
I totally don't get why conservative marriages are so sensitive to outside influences.

Absolutely, my daughters are very confused about our parenting style because of the child abuse, or problems in other families. (Sarcasm).
I have several gay friends and my daughters have grown up around them. They have a very good concept of the traditional family and other alternatives (many which predate and have lasted longer than our "tradition").

I think you're halfway to a more tolerant belief, the other half would be not assuming that a homosexual union is somehow lesser than a heterosexual one.

No. Of course not no matter what bigoted "reason" the homophobes toss out to back up their prejudice.
Live and let live ~ in peace.
Nice question (((LTJ)))
