Why does Barack insist on expanding welfare?

In fiscal year 2000 (the last year for which combined information on social welfare expenditures from all sources is available) federal, state, and local governments spent about $1.01 trillion on social welfare programs. According to the Treasury Department's 2002 Financial Report of the U.S. Government, the total expenditure for social welfare in 2002 was slightly over 4 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP), the monetary total of the domestic goods and services produced by the United States. This reflects a drop of nearly one full percentage point since 1980 and about .75 percent since the early 1990s.

Do we really want to spend more on welfare?

Update:

The wall street bailout is 3/4ths of this stat taking 8 years ago, and the wall street bailout was a 1 time thing.

This is annually, 1 trilllion annually.

1 trillion dollars given away by the govt.

    It's what Community Organizers do.

  • What are the demographics on who's the biggest recipient of such welfare programs? [Excluding the elderly who are collecting Social Security & Medicare.] I guess it doesn't matter about the elderly since the whole SS fiasco isn't even included in that 1 trillion dollar figure. According to David Walker, an Ex US Comptroller, there are 3 sets of financial books for the Government. We are so screwed. With this last bail out, there will be a 4th set.

  • Because his Socialist mentor Jerry Kellman taught him this is how it is done when he took him through the Saul Alinsky Course on Socialism.

In the opening pages of his book ‘Rules for Radicals’

"What follows is for those who want to CHANGE the world from what it is to what they believe it should be. The Prince was written by Machiavelli for the Haves on how to hold power. Rules for Radicals is written for the Have-Nots on how to take it away."

Obama and his wife have quoted so many things out of this book that there is no way anyone with eyes to see or ears to hear cannot recognize that he wants to make the U.S. a Socialist State.

You have to wonder how many of those Hollywood millionaires that are rooting and cheering for him are actually ready to be as financially broke as the rest of us.

EDIT: Tom R - Oh paallleeeeeaaase, give it rest. We've all heard what a Robin Hood, Superman, and Messiah NObama is supposed to be, but you really need to educate yourself. The man has been working on changing the U.S. into a Socialist State for 20 years and if he gets the chance to tax that top 5% of the people and businesses right out of the country he'll achieve his goal. We are NOT going to let that happen.

please get an education before you start to rant fact check what your right wingers are saying before you adopt it as gospel. jane g obama is giving 95% of all americans a tax cut and really you think they are going to line there pockets? check out the movie iraq for sale or just read a non right wing paper for once. you say you want small government and fiscal conservatism and try to demonize the democrats but it doesnt match the facts under clinton all incomes were up , welfare rolls decreased and we were left with a balanced budget . what have we got now. if those are truly your issues why not look at people that can solve the problems instead of causing them. by the way , obama as a community organizer helped get people get jobs and get off of welfare. governments role should be to do things for us we cant do and to try to maintain a healthy safe society. what do think would happen if we eliminated welfare totally? how safe would you feel knowing that there are millions of poor hungry people walking the streets. lastly it makes me sick hearing yall complain about how hard you work an how others arent give me a break . ive worked outside in the hot sun for no money and inside for a lot more money in the insurance industry trust me . when your not making any cash your working hard.

To increase our dependancy on the State. They want us to be joined at the hip with them so we won't know what to do without the State's involvement in our lives . THAT is the Socialist Ideal, total absorption and integration physically and mentally and spiritually. Total State Ownership. Real change,(y'know, the change we all hear about) would grab the Big American Corporates by the balls and give em' a good hard yank, look them in the eyes and say" bring your manufacturing jobs BACK HERE where Real Americans will do the work you have whored out to the lowest bidder overseas, if you ever plan on selling that trash you manufacture, over here" I.E. ,If you sell it here , you build it here, simple enough? Real change involves people having their independance ,their own way, hick or city slicker, to be beholden to no State, not dependancy on the State.

    Please people.

    Go to school !!

and the greater majority of you can't even fathom a 'billion', much less a 'trillion'. That's why the 'trillions' don't interest you. Because you are so foolishly enthralled with domestic programs for the disadvantaged here within the United States

    Pathetic.

    your 'figures' mean nothing.

just something the govt pulled out of their hats to take your attention away from the real 'welfare mess'

God. I'm so glad I have a brain and can think for myself. I'm 24 and know more than most, even older people.

your 'concern' for welfare also includes benefits for those who 'fought' for your freedom you silly, many of whom 'fought' for your tired behind and who have no place to live.

Hmmmm.....social welfare is 1% of GDP, Corporate welfare is 4 times that much....and rising since the news this week. I don't think I want to spend more on corporate welfare......and I DO think that 189,000 Veterans sleeping on the street each night is a big deal. I do thing 6 million elderly people living below the poverty line is a big deal, I do think 47 million people without health care who are working is a big deal.

Because the more the Democrats can tax the Americans the more they can "skim" off the top and line their pockets. Government employees do not generate money its the private sector that generates money--when govt jobs and programs increase so does our taxes because we support govt. and the govt acts like it supports us--impossible-- the only money they have is the money we give them- that is why I vote republican -- the republican philosophy is small govt-tax less-let the private sector do what it does-generate jobs and money..

The more people who are able to get welfare, the larger the democratic base. Those are votes they can"count on".Put the people back on the farms.

Isn't that what Bush is doing right now ? Except the numbers of recipients are much, much lower and the $ numbers higher.

There is plenty of money coming in in Taxes. The way it is being distributed is totally out of balance.

If you are rich you get a lot. If you are the little guy, you get constantly

    crucified.

    I want equality for all.

I guess he cannot fathom the idea of getting people off welfare and self supporting.

    He seems backward.
