Grave Marker Question - What does Co. C 4 U.S. V. INF mean and what war might the deceased have fought in?

Based on the dates of some of the surrounding stones, I suspect this is likely a civil war veteran for the union, but do not know enough about it to know for sure. There is no date on the stone.

Company C, 4th United States Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Could have been as early as the Civil War however this terminology was still being used up until the Spanish American War. Volunteer indicates an organization which was raised without using any state militiamen or service members of the regular (standing) military in the formation. The Rough Riders, for example, were neither militiamen or regulars, they were all volunteers raised for the Spanish American War.
