Has anyone posted a picture of their tattoo, and found out that someone stole it?
Or do you actually know of an instance where this happened? If you have seen the 'stolen' tattoo, was it the same as the original, better, worse, ????
Are any of you leery of posting a picture because of this? I love seeing others original body art, and I think stealing an image is horrible, but a lot of questions pop up here about getting an image of someone else's ink so that the questioner can copy it. It's good that everyone shoots them down. Being inspired by an image is different, .. blatant copying is nasty. I'd love to see pictures of copied work compared to originals.
Thank you for your comments and any effort.

The tattoo that is on my right calf was 100% my design. I drew it, made sure the tattoo artist only made one copy of it to make the stencil, which I took the copy and the stencil home with me. Posted a picture of it on the internet and now 2 years later I own a sweatshirt that I found at Dollar General that has my EXACT tattoo on it. Nothing was changed, not even the shading.
Technically this is worse than someone copying a someone elses tattoo on themselves because this company is making money off of my creative work.
I think when someone copies someone elses tattoo, it shows a complete lack of creativity on their own part. Tattoos should be personal, not to follow some trend of copying a celeb or your best friends ink because "wow that looks so cool!!!!".

I think that in tribal or religious settings it should be a privilege, but outside of that it should be a right. Although people do make mistakes and don't think it through before they get tattoos, that's a personal problem. I think that if you're an adult, then you should be able to make an adult decision about a tattoo. If your decision is based on a faulty foundation, then you will have to suffer the consequences later in life. I feel that adults should be self accountable. I also think that tattoo parlors should be sure to enforce the age regulations on tattoos. I'm not sure if the 18 and up restriction applies in all states, but whatever the rule, the parlors should enforce it to the fullest extent.

I am a little scared of someone copying mine. Mine are completely custom, and I know no one else would want to have the initials that are a part of my first on them , but I don't want any part of the rest of it copied. That's pretty much the reason as to why I won't post a picture on here. I have no issue posting my pics on myspace, but it's only my friends that will see it, not people that are specifically trying to go out and steal someone's idea. I know they say that it is supposed to be a big form of flattery to copy someone, but I think it's just wrong to steal someone else's work! That's also why I make sure to always tell people on here that if they do go onto rate my ink or inked nation to make sure to look for inspiration, not to steal!

Not exactly but I was still offended...
I came up with an idea for a tattoo but I have absolutely no artistic ability and just wasn't communicating what I wanted well with the tattoo artist. I asked a friend of mine who is very good at drawing to help me out and she did (I am grateful for that).
She understood exactly what I wanted and had the same sort of style as me so it came out perfect...then she posts the picture with a "copyright" watermark over it on deviantart where a few other people thanked her and said they were using it for themselves and posted pictures of themselves with the tattoo almost identical. Then my *friend* got it herself and just added a splash of color to it.
This was a spiritual tattoo and I designed it myself because I wanted it to be a special symbol of my spirituality so I was very upset by this.

I don't know anyone who has had this happen, but i agree with you.
It's one thing to like a design and get one based off it. Even taking one part of a design, but substituting your own stuff for the rest is ok by me. But outright copying the whole thing is unoriginal and lazy, on top of plain rude.
I'm not put off of posting pics of mine, they are pretty basic, music notes and paw prints. I know I'm not the first person to get them, and won't be the last. But maybe when I get my custom-made designs done, I'll consider this before posting them on the net.
Sucks for the rest of us though. I search the net for ideas, and just to look at tattoos. But some people with really unique tats aren't posting them because of fear of copycats, so we miss out on seeing some really cool tattoos.
