Hiya, I am an ex driving instructor and can offer you my help. First of all your first lesson usually lasts for 2 hours as their is quite a bit covered. For your first hour or so you will not even drive a single yard because the instructor will be teaching you all about the safety routines that must be applied plus will teach you all about the controls of the car e.g indicators, gears, clutch and brakes etc. The instructor will take you to a quiet road where there are not many cars to put you at ease. After this during the 2nd hour you will drive a few very short distances (about 100 metres) at a time which is called moving off and stopping in first gear a few times. Then by the time you have finished this your first lesson will be over. Hope this helps.

usual aim of the first lesson is to find out what you already know and start from there.

Sounds like you are an absolute beginner - so expect to go through the controls, what they do and how to use them. Setting the seat and mirrors, and engine start drill. Then how to pull away and stop safely at the side of the road. You will feel as though you have achieved something if you can get the car moving in your first lesson.

This should be done in a really quiet area!

    Enjoy

My first lesson, I was driven to a local quiet housing estate.

I sat in the drivers seat as she went through the different leavers etc.

I learnt how to set up my mirrors and seat.

Then I got to drive down the road. On my first lesson I got to 'drive' for about 20 mins before my instructor drove me home.

I got to drive home at the end of my third lesson. and was driving the whole lesson by my fifth (I was driving to the housing estate and around and back).

I have had eight lessons upto now, I have done as well as normal driving, turn in the road and reverse around a corner.

Your instructor will see how well you take to moving the car, and your confidence and how quick you learn, to decide how to structure your lessons. I was a natural at the normal driving, but find the more advanced manoeuvres harder.

Good Luck with your lessons, remember to enjoy them!

you will go somewhere that isn't busy usually a housing estate, he'll drive you there, and he'll take you through some basic stuff, like the gears, breaks, he will prob ask you what you already know, show you some picture of different situations and how to deal with them, then show you how he marks things you've learnt every lesson and what level your up to until your ready to take your test, he'll prob let you drive around the housing estate showing you the bite point how to change gears etc, he will prob do that for a few lessons until he thinks your ready to go anywhere busier
