Does the Israeli prime minister have to be Jewish?

Update:

Can it be a non-Jewish European for example?

    A - ha! Do I sense a career plan forming here......? :)

Around 30% of Israeli citizens are not Jewish, so demographically, it's entirely possible to have a non Jewish prime minister. I don't honestly know how most Israelis would feel about it; I have a hunch that if they believed the non Jewish person could bring about peace, they would vote for them :)

If the Prime Minister dies in office, the Cabinet chooses a new Prime Minister and in the meantime an Interim Prime Minister runs the government. Yigal Allon served as Interim Prime Minister following Levi Eshkol's death, as did Shimon Peres following the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin.

According to Israeli law, if a Prime Minister is incapacitated rather than dies (as was the case following Ariel Sharon's stroke in early 2006), power is transferred to the Acting Prime Minister until the PM recovers (Ehud Olmert took over from Sharon). If the Prime Minister is declared permanently incapacitated then the Acting Prime Minister remains in office for 100 days. Once that period expires the President of Israel oversees the process of assembling a new governing coalition, and in the meantime the Acting Prime Minister becomes Interim Prime Minister.

In the case of Sharon, elections were already due to occur within 100 days of the beginning of his coma thus the post-election coalition building process pre-empted the emergency provisions for the selection of a new Prime Minister. Nevertheless, Olmert was declared Interim Prime Minister on 16 April 2006, after the elections but before he had formed a government (which he did on 4 May 2006).

the law doesn't require it. but as israel's demographics stand, it's very unlikely that someone who's not jewish will be elected as prime minister. about 80% of the population are jewish and they... we... are not likely to vote for an israeli arab (which is the major part of the other 20% or so).

properly did the Israelis kill 6 million Palestinians, did they carry out experiments on them, did they target to kill each and each baby so as that there could be no destiny technology? No - study what number Palestinians were killed, that is contained in the 1000's, no longer tens of millions -an exquisite distinction in numbers and that is as a effect of warfare no longer because a pacesetter has determined that Palestinians are genetically inferior. that is nice to have an aspect - to area with the Palestinians or the Israelis or both or neither even if the size and reason of killing is punctiliously incomparable Israel gained the warfare for territory and the Palestinians do not have sufficient aspects or land to stay in. yet did not the English take extra land from the Natives - forming Australia, Canada, u . s . - many many extra natives were killed in the course of that procedure than Palestinians were killed I agree that the Palestinians have it not effortless and that i think undesirable for them too, yet comparing Israelis to Nazis is performing like they're the purely us of a who has ever been at warfare for territory. The Nazis stand on my own of their brutality and the size of their genocide

Religion is not a pre-requisite for being an Israeli politician, and there are many non-Jews in parliament, as there are Palestinians, Arab Israelis, and Christians. Meanwhile, the only Muslim nation to have a Jew as a major politician is/was Morocco.

Not necessarily, but I don't think many people in Israel would vote for a non-jewish prime minister. Just like not many people in america would vote for a muslim president. People like their leader to share their beliefs.

I dont think so but Israeli is important to Jewish people so it's seems just.

  • I'm not sure. But...does the American president have to be Christian?

Might be a question of precedent rather than one of law (in this country). I don't know much at all about Israel's political machine.
