Algebra 2 question: Area of a rectangle?

The length and width of a rectangle have a sum of 88. What dimensions give the maximum area?

A) length 44, width 44

B) length 35, width 53

C) length 43, width 45

D) length 34, width 54

My teacher says the answer is A - how do you figure? All of these, using the rectangle area equation 2l*2w=a all give you an area of 176. Am I missing something?

    2l+2w=perimeter of a rectangle

the area of a rectangle =l*w

    so

    A) 44*44= 1936 ------- greatest area

    B) 35*53= 1855

    C) 43*45=1935

    D) 34*54=1836

    so, the answer is A

    hope that helps!!!

    Area = length x height

    Nothing is multiplied by 2.

    Guess and check basically,

    A) = 1936

    B) = 1855

    C) =1935

    D) =1836

You're measuring perimeter. For area you multiply the numbers against each other.
