Why can't Republicans say N-U-C-L-E-A-R?
First Dan Quayle couldn't spell and zero common sense. Then we had to listen to Dubya butcher the English Language for 8 years. God Help us if we have to listen to Palin doing her best Edith Bunker imitation for even one term.
I threw this out there because it was annoying at the time. I figured the party hacks would come out with their side tracking attacks. This was not an attack but a legit question.

For all of those above who say "NUCULAR" is a correct pronunciation:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nucular
"Nucular is an ad hoc spelling of an incorrect pronunciation of the word nuclear, representing the IPA: /ˈnjuːkjələr/ (NEW-cue-lurr) pronunciation of that word instead of the correct /ˈnjuːkliːɚ/ (NEW-klee-urr). This pronunciation is incorrect, although some dictionaries recognize it because of its increasing usage."
So, the pronunciation is incorrect. English is constantly being modified, so I don't think it's a big deal in common talk, but it is much more important when we are making official statements from the leaders in our nation.
FYI, I don't take a partisan stance. For example, I think Clinton and Reagan were good presidents, but Carter and GW Bush were horrible. And both Republicans and Democrats have used this language. I find it highly annoying, personally.
To answer the original question, I think it's a common mispronunciation which is passed along in rural areas. Not to say that people in those areas are not educated, but once a mispronunciation becomes common, it's hard to get people to stop using it. And I think Presidents and candidates don't try to correct their pronunciation because they want to connect to those people in those areas.

God help us if we get stuck with a guy using Karl Marx and Saul Alinski's teachings as a guide for running a government! God help us if Obama who thinks we have 57 states in the union. God Help us from Joe Biden, who as a senator didn't remember that the VP is the President of the Senate and doe's not even knoew the Constitution after 35 years in office.

Of course the fact that BOSCO has lied about every position at least 2 to 3 times and BIden thinks that there was commercial television in 1929 and that Franklin D. Roosevelt was president and went on TV. God help us from 2 people that do not have a clue to history or reality. Of course a lot of their supporters do not know that Biden made a total idiot out of himself they think he was correct.

Well, to be fair many Republicans can pronounce "nuclear" properly. Some never learn how to properly pronounce words.
And by the way, nothing is bigger pet peeve for Washingtonians than people who pronounce "Washington" as "WaRshington". There is no R in "Washington" just like there is no U in "nuclear". I suggest people with pronounciation problems hit up an ESL class. Just a thought.

I have two large dictionaries, one from the 1950s and one from the 1960s with a total of 4 slightly different pronunciations of nuclear. Carter also pronounced nuclear like she did. Now let's see those in New York correctly pronounce "you", "bag," "car," "them" and "with."

I don't know but I find it really annoying. And for the record, I'm from New York and I can pronounce all those words correctly. Just saying.

Most Republicans I know pronounce Nuclear correctly. For some reason, a lot of our elected officials, and nominees tend to have trouble. However, have you heard McCain ever mispronounce it?

Here, this is from Websters Dictionary:
Main Entry:
nu·cle·ar
Pronunciation:
\ˈnü-klē-ər, ˈnyü-, ÷-kyə-lər\
BOTH pronunciations are correct. Now, Obama supporters, lets hear you arguing with Websters Dictionary.

How come Obama tells jokes like a frightened 1st grader unless it is on his teleprompter?
I don't care how they pronounce it and long as we use it as a power source, unlike Obama who wants to destroy oil companies, put people out of work and HOPE he finds an alternative solution.
Just because you pronounce every word in your lie correctly does not make me trust you more.
