    That the mild warming we have had so far since the 1850s is harmful is more than a myth it is a scheme to institute a Marxist one world government. Climate is affected by hundreds of variables many of which we have yet to discover. The two most important elements seem to be the sun followed by currents in the ocean that affect currents in the atmosphere like the jet streams. First point that needs to be made is the world is currently in a very mild (cool) warm period. In the last 2,000 years it has been both warmer (+2c) and cooler (-1.5c) than it is currently. The alarmists are using the temperature rise from 1850 to 2000 of approximately 1.5c and the increase from 1960 to 2000 of about .5c as something unprecedented and unusual in all of history despite clear records of at least 5 warming and cooling events that were not only at least as rapid but went higher at the peak. This is why myself and others who have had a reasonable education in basic history enhanced with geology have such a difficult time with the easily disproven statements of the promoters of this hoax. When you consider that just 400 years ago during the age of exploration we had a sudden warming event between the two halves of the little ice age.

    This occurred between the Sporer and Maunder minimums when temperatures went from the little ice age low to about 1c warmer than our current ones and back to little ice age lows in a little over a hundred years. But then those who call themselves scientists and promote this scandal for the most part never studied history and if they did probably flunked it. And it is highly unlikely they can even spell geology let alone intelligently discuss what the subject covers. Because if they had a reasonable knowledge of these two subjects they would never have gotten sucked into the hoax.

    so far their dire scenarios have been hypothetical. whenever they venture out into real predictions and on a time frame that can be checked they have turned out to be wrong. although co2 levels have increased since 1998, the world has not warmed and in the last couple of years it has cooled dramatically.

    you may keep track of monthly mean global temperatures here:

    http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/tabledata/GLB.Ts...

    and the ice extent in the arctic basin over here:

    http://arctic.atmos.uiuc.edu/cryosphere/IMAGES/rec...

    one of the things you will notice in the ice data is that the summer melt in 2008 did not exceed the melt in 2007 and the arctic basin did not become ice free as the global warmistas had predicted.

    some physicists contend that the physics of heat retention by carbon dioxide in the ipcc model is just plain wrong. you may evaluate their argument by visiting this website.

    http://scienceandpublicpolicy.org/

    also, the idea that to go along with the global warming crowd is to err on the side of caution is not really true since some of their prescriptions have already backfired. In my part of the world, the rapid increase in renewable fuel agriculture has become a bigger environmental headache than global warming.

    the case for man made global warming has not been made. there are too many holes in their story. i think we all have to think for ourselves and not just get on a bandwagon whether pro or con.

    no! I will give an example. The polar caps are melting faster then many scientist expected. White deflects heat while earth(dirt,rocks,Mnts,) absorb. If you wore a black tee-shirt on a sunny day you'll be substantially hotter than if you wore white. So as the caps keep melting the Earth keeps warming,and we have some technology to try to stabilize what we've created but an ice age is eminant and I'd be more concerned about that.

    In short. The fresh water from our caps slows the salty ocean currents creating hurricanes,stronger storms,etc,etc.and this in return will create winters like you never seen! The last mini ice age we called it the Dark Ages and it's proved we were thrown into this mini ice age in the matter of a decade.

    So it's going to hot as all get out then just the oppisite.

    Global warming is no myth. Check out the history channel some time or use what's in front of you.(your p/c) It's actually some scary s--t!

    If it's a myth, then why is Iceland melting severely?

    Don't just believe what Republicans say but believe this:

    EVERY major scientific organization says it's real and caused by us, The National Academy of Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Institute of Physics, the American Chemical Society, the American Geophysical Union, the American Meteorological Association, etc.

    Data:

    http://www.globalwarmingart.com/wiki/Image:Instrum...

    http://www.globalwarmingart.com/wiki/Image:Climate...

    Evidence:

    Insect and bird ranges are spreading further north and south;

    Fish populations are shifting towards the poles;

    Breeding seasons and flowering seasons are starting earlier and ending later around the world;

    The north pole became an island for the first time in 160,000 years;

    The hottest five years on record have all happened in our lifetimes;

    Alpine glaciers are melting - and disappearing - around the world;

    Tropical diseases are being found in normally temperate zones;

    A majority of coral reefs - very sensitive to temperature - worldwide show signs of bleaching and death;

    The extent of the arctic ice cap in 2007 and 2008 is the lowest seen in history;

    This year's crop failures due to weather conditions are the worst ever;

    Drought, forest fires, tropical storms are all worsening and increasing;

    Flood barriers and defences are being overwhelmed long before they projected lives;

    etc, etc

    ICELAND is now melting and the ice is slowly disappearing, it may affect the sea and the lower parts of Iceland.

    Views if some people:

    "Pat Robertson (very conservative Christian leader) 'It is getting hotter and the ice caps are melting and there is a build up of carbon dioxide in the air. We really need to do something on fossil fuels.”

    "I believe there is now more than enough evidence of climate change to warrant an immediate and comprehensive - but considered - response. Anyone who disagrees is, in my view, still in denial."

    Ford Motor Company CEO William Clay Ford, Jr.

    "The science of global warming is clear. We know enough to act now. We must act now."

    James Rogers, CEO of Charlotte-based Duke Energy.

    The bottom line:

    This is science and what counts is the data, not people's intuition.

    "I wasn’t convinced by a person or any interest group—it was the data that got me. I was utterly convinced of this connection between the burning of fossil fuels and climate change. And I was convinced that if we didn’t do something about this, we would be in deep trouble.”

    Vice Admiral Richard H. Truly, USN (Ret.)

    Former NASA Administrator, Shuttle Astronaut

    Take note:

    "The scientific understanding of climate change is now sufficiently clear to begin taking steps to prepare for climate change and to slow it. Human actions over the next few decades will have a major influence on the magnitude and rate of future warming. Large, disruptive changes are much more likely if greenhouse gases are allowed to continue building up in the atmosphere at their present rate. However, reducing greenhouse gas emissions will require strong national and international commitments, technological innovation, and human willpower."

    The National Academy of Sciences.

    Two VERY non liberal sources:

    "Former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich challenged fellow conservatives to stop resisting scientific evidence of global warming"

    "National Review (the most prestigious conservative magazine) published a cover story this past week calling on conservatives to shake off denial and get into the climate policy debate"

    "The global climate is changing and human activities are contributing to that change...Scientific research provides a basis for mitigating the harmful effects of global climate change through decreased human influences (e.g., slowing greenhouse gas emissions, improving land management practices), technological advancement (e.g., removing carbon from the atmosphere), and finding ways for communities to adapt and become resilient to extreme events."

    The American Institute of Physics and American Geophysical Union.

    Global warming happens, as does global cooling. It's a natural event, and man has no ability to influence when it will occur, or how much of a temperature swing there'll be.

    Interesting or entertaining? I mean, good news is always nicer to hear than bad news, doesn't mean it's true though.

    To counter this 'evidence' I could trawl through the web finding boring scientific papers, but you wouldn't want to read them. Scientists have better things to do and wouldn't want to spend their time making their results entertaining for everyone to read. Bad news can never be made that readable, and it is up to others to find the solutions.

    Have you read Pullman's Dark materials trilogy? excellent books. It closes with something along the lines of 'the ignorance and wickedness always hog the limelight, holding power and proclaiming themselves endlessly so that their subjects have no time to consider anything else. The truth, wisdom and the just are forced to hide in the shadows, taking any opportunity to work and speak where they will not be harried and persecuted by the ignorant'. I do the books an injustice, but read them.

    Very funny your first link is by Arthur Robinson he has no credibility.

    Your second link is about the OISM petition, who runs the OISM and created the petition, the very same Arthur Robinson and this is the OISM

    http://www.oism.org/

    Nothing more than a big tin shed, with, in their own word six faculty members and while doesn't mention it two them are Mr Robinson's sons.

    Civilisation has sped up what would otherwise be a natural cycle of the planet. There have been times when the planet was hotter than we humans have ever experienced. Yes, some life died off just as life overall, flourished.

    This carbon trading credits is a pathetic idea though for it does nothing but collect more taxes for governments. Cutting down trees without replacing them is a major contributor to carbon emissions, just as is the idea of water desalination plants.

    The Global Warming Myth?

    The End Is Not Near -- Instead of Panicking Over Climate Change, Learn to Adjust to It

    The heavy breathing over global warming is enough to terrify anyone.

    Last week the Washington Post interviewed a 9-year-old who said the Earth is "just starting to fade away." In 20 years there will be "no oxygen" he said, and he'll be dead. The Post went on to say that "for many children and young adults, global warming is…defining their generation." How sad.

    (AP)Thirty-six years of consumer reporting have taught me to be skeptical of environmental scares. Much of what the media scares us about turns out to be myths.

    Watch "Myths, Lies and Downright Stupidity" on a special edition of "20/20" Friday, May 4th at 10 p.m. EDT

    But is the global warming crisis a myth? Read on.

    Excerpts from "Myth, Lies, and Downright Stupidity," coming out in paperback May 1. (Click here to buy "Myths, Lies and Downright Stupidity").

    MYTH: Global warming will cause huge disruptions in climate, more storms, and the coasts will flood! America must sign the Kyoto Treaty!

    This has to be broken into four pieces.

    MYTH No. 1: The Earth is warming!

    TRUTH: The Earth is warming. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said the global average surface temperature increased about 0.6 degrees Celsius over the 20th century.

    MYTH No. 2: The Earth is warming because of us!

    TRUTH: Maybe. The frantic media suggest it's all about us. But the IPCC only said it is likely that we have increased the warming.

    Our climate has always undergone changes. Greenland was named Greenland because its coasts used to be very green. It's presumptuous to think humans' impact matters so much in comparison to the frightening geologic history of the earth. And who is to say that last year's temperature is the perfect optimum? Warmer may be better! More people die in cold waves than heat waves.

    MYTH No. 3: There will be storms, flooded coasts and huge disruptions in climate!

    TRUTH: There are always storms and floods. Will there be much bigger disruptions in climate? Probably not.

    Schoolchildren I've interviewed were convinced that America is "dying" in a sea of pollution and that "cities will soon be under water!"

    Lawyers from the Natural Resources Defense Council (another environmental group with more lawyers than scientists) warn that "sea levels will rise, flooding coastal areas. Heat waves will be more frequent and more intense. Droughts and wildfires will occur more often."

    Wow.

    But many scientists laugh at the panic.

    Dr. John Christy, professor of Atmospheric Science at the University of Alabama at Huntsville said: "I remember as a college student at the first Earth Day being told it was a certainty that by the year 2000, the world would be starving and out of energy. Such doomsday prophecies grabbed headlines, but have proven to be completely false." "Similar pronouncements today about catastrophes due to human-induced climate change," he continued, "sound all too familiar and all too exaggerated to me as someone who actually produces and analyzes climate information."

    The media, of course, like the exaggerated claims. Most are based on computer models that purport to predict future climates. But computer models are lousy at predicting climate because water vapor and cloud effects cause changes that computers fail to predict. In the mid-1970s, computer models told us we should prepare for global cooling.

    Scientists tell reporters that computer models should "be viewed with great skepticism." Well, why aren't they?

    The fundamentalist doom mongers also ignore scientists who say the effects of global warming may be benign. Harvard astrophysicist Sallie Baliunas said added CO2 in the atmosphere may actually benefit the world because more CO2 helps plants grow. Warmer winters would give farmers a longer harvest season, and might end the droughts in the Sahara Desert.

    Why don't we hear about this part of the global warming argument? "It's the money!" said Dr. Baliunas. "Twenty-five billion dollars in government funding has been spent since 1990 to research global warming. If scientists and researchers were coming out releasing reports that global warming has little to do with man, and most to do with just how the planet works, there wouldn't be as much money to study it."

    MYTH No. 4: Signing the Kyoto Treaty would stop the warming.

    TRUTH: Hardly.

    In 1997, the United Nations met in Kyoto, Japan, and asked the developed nations of the world to cut CO2 emission to below 1990 levels.

    Nope.

    It is a natural cycle of the planet to which all living things contribute something.
