Where does the word 'dad' come from?
I can understand how mum/mom can come from mama or mother. But no matter how I think about it, how do we get 'dad' from 'father'?? Anyone know when this word came into use and where it came from?
Babies make a lot of noises, gaga, baba... only saying mama and dada when prompted to by parents surely?

"Dad" was first recorded around 1500, but it is probably much older. It was taken from child's speech/baby talk. Babies can easily say "da" or "dada". It's a nearly universal word and probably prehistoric.

that is known to come back from infant communicate. The P sound in papa comes from how human beings talked to little ones, making use of "explosive" (or popping) style of sounds to get little ones interest. it really is why Romantic languages have pepe, padre and so on. because it change into how human beings could say father to a baby.
