What's better - letting someone vote who shouldn't be allowed, or disallowing someone who should be allowed?
The Democrats always want more people to vote -including some pro-Democratic groups occasionally making up fraudulent voter registrations.
Republicans always want less people to vote -resulting in voter suppression of minorities, purging the voter rolls of legitimate voters, etc.
It is worth asking the more fundamental question, though, because in the end we have to decide how strict the voter registration/voting standards are, and the stricter we make them (to prevent fraud) the more legitimate people may be denied the right to vote. There is no absolute standard - either we make it easier to vote, which makes it easier to vote twice or for a non-person to vote, or we make it harder, which will disenfranchise some people (because they are illiterate, have no ID, etc.)
Which is better? There is a saying that it is better to let ten guilty men go free than to kill an innocent man. How should that apply to voter registration and voting in general?
Mewl - answer a question with another question. I like it. But the fact that people are lazy or uninformed does not mean we shouldn't energize or educate them. I think we all need to do more to register everyone and get everyone to vote. Many countries have automatic or same-day voter registration. The US system actually discourages people from voting relative to other democracies. Not a good system IMHO. Which takes us back to my original question: should we change the laws to make it easier for people to vote and get higher participation, even if it means that some people can commit voter fraud?
"Democrat left-wing groups go out and find poor, uninformed, unregistered individuals and persuade them to register as democrats. They coach them to vote as democrats, without any knowledge of any issues. These new voters are often bribed with cash, cigarettes, or whatever else they place value in. This is a common practice."
You say it like it's a bad thing. What's the point of all the low-information TV advertising?
I like the idea of financial incentives to vote. Australia has a fine for people who don't vote. What a great way to fund elections and encourage people to get involved.
And for Republican voter suppression, you have to be kidding me. Ken Mehlman apologized for the history of Republican voter suppression in the South.

Republicans have made no secret that they have discouraged low income voters ever since the days of Ronald reagan.

Your outline of the political parties and their voter participation goals are flawed at the outset.
Democrat left-wing groups go out and find poor, uninformed, unregistered individuals and persuade them to register as democrats. They coach them to vote as democrats, without any knowledge of any issues. These new voters are often bribed with cash, cigarettes, or whatever else they place value in. This is a common practice.
Republicans are not as active in voter registration drives. This is, at least in part, due to the fact that A much larger percentage of republicans are already registered. A larger percentage of individuals, who are more likely to vote for a republican, are self-motivated and will take the initiative to register themselves...without the party-favors.
There are more democrat-registered voters out there, simply because of the "community organizations" and their tactics. Even in the primaries, Far more democrats voted. This means nothing.
You will see, on November 4th, the full power of republican voters.

Letting people vote who are ineligible to vote or illegally voting taints the system.
The original voting was for the people to decide who should be in charge with the people still holding the power.
Voter fraud does nothing but hurt our country and skew everything to one side. When one side is directly against the Constitution and the Founding principles of the country voter fraud allows them to win and change the country so that it is no longer recognizable from it starting and the things that made it great.

You're minimizing what 'Democrats' are doing. It isn't just an 'occasional' fraudulent registration. In Ohio alone they're estimating 200,000+ fraudulent registrations. Indiana has 105% voter registration. These are just two of the states.
This doesn't include attempts to disenfranchise the overseas military vote. Or the 30,000 convicted felons registered in Florida.
I have yet to see evidence of 'Republicans' trying to suppress anyone's vote. Unless you consider requiring a picture I.D. to vote as 'suppression'.

My question in response is, why the push to get people registered when voting is a right, and a conscious decision?
If people don't register, that is their choice.
The retina scan that is being suggested is a good idea. It needs to be a nationwide database though.
And I will reiterate that the retina scan is the most objective method possible. As long as it is a national database.

In a democracy everyone should have the right to vote unless they are under-age or on an IQ-level of that of a child's.

every voter registration handled by acorn should be thrown out for starters. every person who can not prove who they are with a legitimate id and address should be thrown out. every felons vote should be thrown out. the democrats are so blatantly trying to destroy the legitimacy of voting . those who are breaking the law should be investigated and prosecuted.

Its better to have some votes be fraudulent than disallow legal voters from voting.

i think its better to let someone vote who shouldn't.
the point of democracy is that everyone (should) have a say in government.
