My oil furnace does not seem to be working off the thermostat?

I have turned my heat on in my new rental house. The valve on the furnace needed to be opened to get heat so we opened it yesterday. Set the thermostat to 66 and it went up to 82 without turning off. The landlord tells me to flip the emergency switch off to stop the heat from coming on but then I don't have any hot water. She says keep the switch on till it gets to 74 degrees then turn it off til it gets down to 66 then back on. I CANNOT live all winter like this. Any ideas on what is wrong? I don't mind paying a minimal amount to fix it because she doesn't seem like she thinks she should.

Her house her problem, sounds to me like you need a heat tech. or someone who knows about electricity. Could be a nail through stat wire, very difficult to repair not seeing it. There is a primary control on the furnace with a red button {RESET} on it there are 2 f,s an 2 t"s. Turn unit on, turn stat down, go to primary control an remove wire from 1 t terminal of control, if furnace stops, either bad stat or bad stat wire

The landlord needs to fix the furnace. If your landlord refuses then I would contact housing court, the board of health, or whatever agency you have in your area that deals with these situations.

She might just be waiting until Monday to call a repairman. Weekends are real expensive times to call them.

Ask her if she is going to have someone come out this week to fix it. If she doesn't, then you have a right to get it fixed, and take the cost of repairs off of your rent. Just make sure to keep the original receipt, and give her a copy. If she ever tries to take you to court for the money, the original receipt is your proof of payment.
