Christians...why do you not practice Mosaic Law if the bible states you have to?

Genesis 17:19

And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.

Exodus 12:14, 17, 24

And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever. ... And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened bread; for in this selfsame day have I brought your armies out of the land of Egypt: therefore shall ye observe this day in your generations by an ordinance for ever. ... And ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance to thee and to thy sons for ever.

Leviticus 23:14,21,31

It shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations.

Deuteronomy 4:8-9

What nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day? ... teach them thy sons, and thy sons' sons.

Deuteronomy 7:9

Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations.

Deuteronomy 11:1

Therefore thou shalt love the LORD thy God, and keep his charge, and his statutes, and his judgments, and his commandments, alway.

Deuteronomy 11:26-28

Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse; A blessing, if ye obey the commandments of the LORD your God, which I command you this day: And a curse, if ye will not obey the commandments of the LORD your God.

1 Chronicles 16:15

Be ye mindful always of his covenant; the word which he commanded to a thousand generations ... an everlasting covenant.

Psalm 119:151-2

Thou art near, O LORD; and all thy commandments are truth. Concerning thy testimonies, I have known of old that thou hast founded them for ever.

Psalm 119:160

Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever.

Malachi 4:4

Remember ye the law of Moses.

Matthew 5:18-19

Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or tittle shall nowise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven.

Luke 16:17

It is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail.

Update:

I am an atheist, and it seems clear to me that it was Paul, not Jesus, who instituted the New Covenant. After explicit warnings about false prophets and not to abandon the Mosaic Law, I find it interesting that Christians don't have reservations about this.

The Law is with us...Perhaps you might want to read the New Testament again.

You seem to have missed the verse prior to the one you quoted in Mathew.

    I have it for you.

Mat 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.

Jesus came to free you from the law by making you new and in agreement with the righteousness of God.

    Thus fulfilling the law.

The law required your life. Jesus paid the penalty of sin through the atonement.

Those who accept the atonement are by faith new creatures born again.

Not knowing Jesus or having the gift of revelation through the Holy Spirit it is understandable how you could misunderstand.

Paul in fact taught the same gospel as Jesus.

Lets examine what Jesus taught about the atonement one verse come immediately to mind.

John 6:51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

Let's also remember Jesus taught being born again.

John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

Understand a Christian is not diregarding God's righteous law but much more than that has by faith and through Jesus Christ been made new and in agreement with God's righteousness.

The old testament says that the covenant of moses would pass away and a new covenant would come. The new covenant was prophesied about in the old testament several times, the Messiah and the role he would play was prophesied about a lot as well. Jesus fulfils all of the prophecies concerning the Messiah, and the covenant he brought fulfils the prophecies about the old and new covenant.

Jesus himself followed the mosaic law before he was crucified because the mosaic law still stood, only until after he died and was resurrected could there be a new covenant. Jesus did institute the new covanent. you need to re-read the NT.

The flaw in your argument is that Gentile Christians were not a party to the old covenant, seeing as they did not undergo circumcision in the flesh.

Your citation of Mt. 5:18-19 is flawed, seeing as you assume this is talking about the legalities of the law, which is not possible when you take into consideration the context and verse 17.

You claim to be an atheist, and I believe you, seeing as you demonstrate a total lack of understanding regarding the Scriptures.

Circumcision was an everlasting covenant also, btw.

We are not under the Mosaic law and can eat those things. Magic and sorcery were forbid in the New Testament. Either Jesus or an apostle rid a woman of a demon of divination and the family was upset because they lost money because of this. I will come back and edit this later and address this more fully.

All that you quoted was given to the Jews, and Christ made a point to reiterate some of it in His messages, but other parts were specifically "declassified" for the gentile seekers, and not all by Paul. Christ's important emphasis was on the Top Ten and the Shema. In fact, He clearly stated that on this hangs all the Law and the Prophets. Now, speaking to His Jewish students, He plainly said in Matt. 5:17 that the Law was still in full effect for them.

Paul was a difficult person to deal with at times, to be sure, but we must recall that he was picked by God, not the other way around. He was the chief enemy of God and all His people in his early life, but was dramatically kidnapped for the cause of Christ and described himself as a prisoner of Christ on several occasions. I don't think he was in a position to really mess up.

If the old law was capable of saving souls, there would have been no need of a Messiah. God could have stayed in Heaven.

    You are flat out wrong.

Im not certain but you seam to be referring to the Passover which is in the old testiment to honor the children of Egypt who were released from bondage.

Jesus in the final supper said this is the new testiment that he who so believes in him shall have eternal life after death and live with him in Paradise. this is "the meal of communion" that should be done any time you are in Communion with other Christians (Christian is someone who believes Chist Emanuel Jesus died on the cross for their sins)

Like any religious person of the modern age, they will pick and chose. Even Jews realize this as most of the laws went away after 70 CE.

@ Dogs are good people: And do we have world peace, as was prophesied for the messiah? No. Was Jesus a warrior? No.

actually Paul defended the law constantly, he made the comment a couple times saying we should still follow the law.

Your question implies that christianity isn't a pick'n'mix for convenience religion!

Sir, how dare you! One is perfectly entitled to pick all the best bits, like going to heaven and disregard all the awkward bits that don't make any sense. It's a christian's right, isn't it?

Mosaic law indeed... you'll be going to hell. That's for sure. I'd start packing now if I were you... :o)
