You are in luck... There is a recall on 96 Cherokees for this exact reason, rattling catalytic converter (it falls apart).

    Go here http://www-5.jeep.com/webselfservice/jeep/index.js...

and put in your VIN code to see if your on the list.

The muffler is only loose. It is suspended by a metal bar which in your case the bar/connection is probably loose. The muffler making a rattling noise would not be a problem with your engine, however, if the engine is in bad shape, the sound through the muffler will reflect that. The issue is most likely an old engine with wear and tear. You might want to consider an overhaul which is very expensive or even a simple tune up. There is not much you can do by yourself. Consult a mechanic.

Muffler rattle is common on older Jeeps. They often break at the joint where the tail pipe is inserted into the muffler. Unless you can weld, you will need to have the muffler replaced.

This would be a good time to add a cat back performance exhaust. Often these are cheaper than having the muffler installed at a shop, if you can install the performance exhaust yourself.

Either your muffler is coming off or it is loose.
