Why would anyone believe the polls?

They are so conflicting. When you are called for a poll, their questions are so twisted that it is impossible to answer. I believe most people tell them what they want to hear.

they make them to detour those who would vote for the losing candidate to think their vote doesn't count or not to bother voting. take some communication classes and you'd see how it really works. what about all the people that didn't take the survey like me and you? its all about politics

I wonder who runs the polls?

Maybe it's the same people who want their candidate to win. It's kinda odd that I see more McCain signs posted around town than Obama signs. If you check yahoo answers and a topic is about obama and McCain, mccain always has the must votes in the yahoo answers.

I hate to say it but I don't think that America is ready for a black president. Race is not an issue with me however, it is with many people I come across. I think it started with the rodney king and OJ simpson trial and people are still holding on to that grudge. Polls are biased. If Rush Limbaugh was running a poll, what do you think it would look like? If Oprah was running a poll, would it be the same as Rush Limbaugh's? The best advice I can give for the polls is "Consider the source"

    look at http://www.realclearpolitics.com/polls/

The have a "poll of polls" there, which is all the polls added up and averaged.

so if Poll A was wrong 3 points one way and poll B was 3 points wrong the other way, the would average out to be right on target.

It could be that 50 polls are wrong one way and only 10 are wrong the other, so still off. But if the average of 60 polls says party A is ahead by 3 then it's more reliable than just one poll saying it.

'RCP average' is the real clear politics average of all polls together.

    Some polls are pretty good.

To those of you who would say 'you can use statistics to prove anything' there are hopefully and equal number who would reply 'yes, even the truth.'

And of course, people tend to believe in polls when it suits them i.e. when their candidate is doing well.

I remember a month ago when McCain's numbers were dropping post-Palin interviews and supporters were saying it didn't matter because it was all about EV. They were so vehement about it that they got quite aggressive. For some odd reason, I'm not hearing as much from those people anymore about EV.

I think race is a symptom not an issue... Polls are supposed to fluctuate in an attempt for pollsters who are paid well to not look incompetent when the results are known.

polls are not meant to be 'believed', they are a snapshot of opinions and are meant to be analyzed and used to predict an outcome

for example, lets say you live in a family of four and your mom asks everyone if they would rather have candy apples or ice cream for dessert by a show of hands... whoever votes for candy apples does not necessarily endorse candy apples as a proper dessert food, but in their opinion, given those choices, they would prefer a candy apple for dessert on that particular day

can that candy apple poll be believed?

You got to believe something, and there are so many different polls. Their has to be some validity in them.

Only one poll matters, the electoral college's.
