Cost of meals in Egypt?

I'm going to Sharm el Sheik in November for 2 weeks. I've never been to Egypt before. I have no idea how much money to take. Anybody know?

While Egypt in general is quite cheap Sharm el Sheikh is not. It's the most touristy part of Egypt, 25% of Egypt's total income comes from tourism so don't expect a bargain!

It does however depend on where you go, it will be cheaper than UK wherever you go, I went to what I guess was one of the more expensive restaurants in Sharm for a Lebanese meal, had loads of food and it cost me and my husband about £20, I think that's about $40.

On the other hand I have also been to a very cheap takeaway place, which is mainly frequented by Egyptians and we both a lot of food, (in this case fool sandwiches, fool or foul is the Egyptian national dish, it's fava beans cooked for a long time with tomatoes and spices in something like pitta bread) and it cost the two of us around £3, or $6.

There are also the obligatory fast food chains in Na'ama bay, the main area in Sharm where you can find McDonalds, KFC, pizza hut, etc etc, I know the prices of these are cheaper than UK but not by much, I think it was around £2.50 or $5 for an extra value meal there. If you're really on a budget or you find you can't get on with Egyptian food you could just eat in places like that I guess!

If you're staying in a hotel that has a fridge in your room you might find that you want to buy some bread and other food to eat at lunch time, food in supermarkets, while not a complete bargain is a lot cheaper than Europe even in Sharm.

If you want to go somewhere that is much cheaper than Sharm for a day then head off towards Dahab, it's about an hour coach ride and doesn't cost more than about £2 or $4, and you can also arrange a taxi but this will work out more expensive depending on how much your taxi driver feels like ripping you off on that particular day!

If you head into Old Sharm beware, it's the only place in Sinai I've ever had food poisoning but the food is cheaper there than in Na'ama bay.

Also as a side point make sure you don't eat any uncooked vegetables or unwashed fruit, food poisoning is very easy to get in Egypt, if you do get it go to a local Egyptian pharmacy as they are well prepared and stocked for such eventualities, the medicine is SUPER cheap there, and you can get everything over the counter without seeing a doctor (in fact in Egypt they refer to pharmacists as doctors).

    hope this helps xx

Sharm el-Sheikh may be the Sinai Peninsula's significant tourism heart and among the world's top fishing places and today you will get there your holiday with the help of this place hotelbye . Sharm el Sheikh is one of Egypt's most useful locations in the event that you only want to chill out on the beach, and it's a chosen by household holidays due to the exemplary facilities on offer. Whether you are here for the mud or the fish life, Sharm el-Sheikh is a great choice for a beach break following discovering the temples and tombs in the rest of the country. Also, fringed by a bright mud beach and swaying side trees, Naama Bay could be the epicentre of Sharm el-Sheikh's resort life. There are plentiful restaurants, cafés, and souvenir shops if you get bored of the mud, but Naama Bay is really exactly about the beach.

Actually Sharm is not that cheap anymore for anything.

I have lived here for the last six years & have seen around 40 - 50% rise in prices.

The money you require depends mainly on your lifestyle, also whether you are A.I.the area you will be staying.

If you let me know what hotel, the area etc., i will be able to give you a more accurate answer.

If your going all inc then you will not need very much at all, its very cheap to eat or do anything, i went with my wife for two weeks and i spent £500 and found that quite hard, haggle for everything and i mean everything, even the taxis, never pay more than 25 egyption pounds ( £2.50 ) for any ride. If you can find Banks St there is a bar there with a load of hieneken brollies outside, you can get a big bottle of local beer there for 80p and its gorgeous, there are bars that are expensive but you just avoid them, you will get hassled a lot, just tell them politely that your not interested and keep on walking. Remember one golden rule HAGGLE FOR EVERYTHING. Good luck and enjoy. If you need more info then e-mail me

while the majority of egypt is cheap sharm is far from cheap. expect to pay near english prices for food and entertainment and higher for alcohol. take duty free with you and eating in old sharm is cheaper than new.

Depends what and where you eat. Every town had Kosheri restaurants which sell one dish only, 'kosheri'. It's a mix of lentils, chickpeas, rice, pasta, noodles and tomatoes and goes for about 1$ with a drink. Ideal if you're on a budget.

a meal in Sharm can be from 30$ to 8$.

a taxi chareges you according to the distance and the time , but distances are small , no big deal.

you must take extra money to feel free and secure .

    have a nice trip.

Food in Egypt is really cheap but you might want to take extra money for activities like scuba diving and snorkeling or souvenirs. As for how much you need it's difficult to say. Take your credit card.
