Why does Ryan Howard stand so far away from the plate?

Does it give him more power to hit HRs? It seems to me that it makes him reach more for pitches on the outside of the plate and thus makes him strike out more often. Guys like Utley and Victorino crowd the plate. Am I the only person noticing this? Am I taking crazy pills?

Ryan Howard staands so far away from the plate so he doesn't get too out in front of the pitch. Pitchers love to pitch Ryan Howard inside the plate because Howard is a good outside hitter.

He feels that he can reach the plate by standing that far off. Swings a big bat and has some big arms. He also feels he can get around on the inside pitch

He strikes out a lot though.
