Used vehicle for teenager?
Ok i'm 16 and i take my road test pretty soon. I'm hoping to get a used car with the next few years. I could use an old 92 tempo that my grandma has but its just so slow and uncool. I will be buying this car with my own money. Right now I have a little over 4K in the bank to use towards this car. I could probably make a few thousand during this school year at work and then about another 4K this summer. So I would be looking at buying a used vehicle that is 10k or less. Then i have to pay for insurance and gas and a license and what not so I don't have a lot of money. I was wondering what type of vehicle you think I should buy. All the other kids at school have these cheap cavaliers and sunfires and I don't want to look cheap. I want to drive around all my lady friends! jk. So I probably wouldn't need a big vehicle. Not to small either would have to be a four door. A truck would be nice to cuz i'm kind of in to the manly vehicles. But it would be pointless cuz I wouldn't be hauling anything, so what do you think? The vehicle would have to have some km/ miles on it so I would need something reliable and I probably wouldn't be able to get a vehicle that was made in 2000's which i'm ok with. It has to be automatic cuz i don't know how to drive stick. I'll probably get my vehicle off autotraders.ca. I don't need the exact vehicle I just want some tips and stuff for buying my first used car. Its got to be varily decent on gas though too cuz i don't have a lot of money either and fairly reliable as well. Thanks so much I know all the info i gave u is kind of jumbled up.

pretty much any honda or toyota will do. subarus are pretty good too and they have all wheel drive which is good if it snows where you are. Subaru foresters are good SUV's but there not the best looking, subaru impreza are pretty sweet. Scion (toyota) makes a funky four door called the xB but its not for everyone. Any other Scion is good too. Honda CRV's are good along with the honda Element but again the element isn't for everyone. Toyota RAV 4's are pretty good. You have a lot of choices but i would suggest getting an japanese vehicle because they are cheaper to fix than german cars but break less than American cars. Mazda protege's and mazda 3's are great cars too.

Picking you're first vehicle isn't an easy task. The first vehicle I had that was truly mine took almost a whole year to find (my budget was a lot smaller than yours though, about $3,000). In the end, I went for a 1996 Geo Tracker 4X4 Cabriolet from a local pastor. It got good gas mileage (32 miles per gallon highway), was decent off-road (only stuck once, in a clay pit), was fun to drive, and was a convertible to boot. I spent $3,200 for it after borrowing about $600 from my father.
One tip to keep in mind which my father hammered into mine is this: Never buy a vehicle on the spot. Make sure you look the vehicle over carefully, listen to how it runs, look for things like rust (I live in Michigan, in the United States, so it's very common here, and I imagine Canada probably has its' fair share too), fluid leaks of any kind, and a trashed interior. Also, have an experienced mechanic that you trust look at it to ensure you didn't miss anything, like a cracked head or blown gasket. Don't fall for "today only" deals. That just means the seller wants it out of there now, and for a reason.
If you're looking under $10,000, and want a truck, but think it's pointless to have one if you don't haul anything, you might consider a used cartruck from the 1980s. There are several to choose from, including the Dodge Rampage, Chevrolet El Camino, Plymouth Scamp, Ford Ranchero, Subaru Brat, and GMC Caballero, but the Dodge, Subaru, and Plymouth are 4-Cylinder only, and not very fast. The Ford is faster, but if you want true performance, you have to for either the Chevrolet El Camino SS or the GMC Caballero Sprint, which have high peformance V-8s from the Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS. The Subaru is the only one that offers 4-Wheel Drive, as all the others are 2-Wheel Drive (Ford, GMC, and Chevrolet have Rear-Drive and Dodge and Plymouth have Front-Drive). All of these models are manly, but more designed for street driving than hauling cargo, but they can do that in a pinch (think about it, you'll be leaving for college in about two to three years, and you can haul all your junk with you in one trip most likely if you have a large bed). You can pick these vehicles up for around $5,000 in great condition. If you want something newer, I would also recommend the Subaru Baja, which is similar to the above models, but offers All-Wheel Drive and a turbocharger to add handling and power. Plus it's a Crew Cab, which means you can haul up to five people plus cargo; a regular, 2-Door model isn't offered.
You can view these vehicles by either looking them up on Google or Yahoo image searches, or through Autotrader's search engine.
I hope this has answered your question. If you have any more, please feel free to ask.

My personal opinion is that as a teenager (which I was once :D) you are looking for looks, reliablity and then probably cost of ownership. As you grow older those factors probably will change. But I know having a cool looking car is important.
I would consider going with a Honda or a Toyota (Civic, Accord, Camry, Corolla). With 4k you have quite a few options as far as the class of vehicle but those have a good reputation of being both reliable and lower cost of ownership (gas milage and availaibity of parts). Then the almighty cool factor, Hondas are pretty notorius for being modifiable so you can do things to increase that wow factor.
So you could get all of what you are looking for...but more importantly getting you to school and work when you need to be there.
Hope that helps

The Honda Civic is like the most popular car for teens, for good reason. It's relatively cheap to buy, drive, and insure. It looks good, has good performance, is safe, and gets good gas mileage. Here's some other suggestions if you don't like the Civic:
