Can you help me to understand?
What do they mean when they say a lack of jobs? It seems to me that there are always want ads. Is it that the jobs available are just unappealing? I have a hard time thinking there aren’t jobs when there are signs up all the time that say "Help Wanted".

Well there are jobs available but as you said they are unappealing trust me I know plenty about it, cause my contract is expiring on the 14th of January and well they are not renewing anymore :( it sucks. I have applied for about 40 jobs over the past 2 months but the pay after i minus traveling, food expenses I am left with a grand total of $500.00 and well that got to last me a whole month. Well I'm from Trinidad that is in the Caribbean and well $1us is equal to about $6.00tt. So everything is sort of expensive compare to America.

There may be 50, 100 or 200 applicants for every job posted, depending on the industry. My wife has had numerous interviews that she thought went really well over the last few years, yet no offers. I have to assume that even if she's in the top 1% there may be 3 other people just a little bit better than her.

It's partly that, but there are 300 million people in the U.S. while the official labor force is only ~ 130 million (this is the figure they use to calculate the unemployment rate). There is a gap of 170 million jobs. Some are old and retired, some are children, some are housewives so it's partially offset by demographics. But there aren't enough jobs for everyone in our economy. It is poorly structured.

There are high paying jobs, but not enough people are qualified to fill those jobs. Doctors, Nurses, Programmers, Industrial Engineers, and specialty trades are difficult to fill partly because as baby boomers retire, there are not enough skilled workers to replace them. There are many jobs in the retail sector, but they usually don't provide high pay or benefits unless you get promoted a ways.

I agree allot of minimum wage temporary or commission sales that are a dead end occupation jobs . McDonald's can only hire so many . They split up there work now . May as well be part time

You may have 10,000,000 jobs available but if those pay below poverty level then you have a mixture of smart unemployed and people working hard to be poor.

It's people who get laid off from high paying jobs and then do not want to loose their lifestyle by accepting a lower paying job. So they complain that there are no jobs out there because another high paying job doesn't just fall into their lap.

I do not disagree that jobs are available. Good paying jobs are not available. Our manufacturing base in this country as left and it is hurting our economy.
