The reasoning for creating the electoral college is dated. In the late 1700's, states were more independent. It was thought that a smaller state like Maryland might be trampled upon because another state like Virginia, having more residents, would hold too much sway. The electoral college actually makes the votes by people in small states count just a bit more than the votes by people in larger states.

The reasoning for keeping it is much more relevant. Consider the nightmare that was Florida in 2000. Now imagine a *nationwide* recount.

No I don't agree that presidents should be elected by the electoral process instead of the popular vote.

The most simple way (each citizen's vote counts) is the best way but leave it to politicians to make things as complicated and unfair as they possibly can.

If one president gets 1 million votes in a certain state than those 1 million votes should count towards him. The votes should not be thrown out just because the majority of people in one particular state voted the opposite way.

As it is not there are a few states that are choosing the president for the whole country instead of it being how it should....that the majority wins.

The electoral college was put in place to try to level each states vote i believe and to speed up the process. I do not however think in this day and age with all of the technology we have that it is needed or fair.

I would like to see it go away. It probably never will though.

This system was instituted to keep major population centers like NY, FL, and CA from always deciding who would be president. By giving each state a selected number of electoral college votes and awarding them to the candidate who wins the state the college ensures that each state is represented equally.

Yes I affirm that they should, as people are not well educated on the issues, and will vote for whoever the media prefers, which is a liberal media, hence it will be unfairly biased. Hence by having those less tainted by media, we are more prone as a country to have a fair election. Also it gives each state more say as opposed to the popular vote, where the vote is being done largely by highly populated areas hence it will be more that areas views as opposed to the whole countries views.

Yes, it is the only way to keep the voting fair among states, If popular vote was the only method than only a few states would end up choosing the president for all.

It was put into place to keep a few states from deciding the presidential elections. It doesn't however, keep a few states from choosing who our candidates will be. I say, have a nationwide primary on one day, and then let popular vote decide the election.

As for the larger populated states deciding the elections, that would mean that the majority would rule.

It was put in place to keep larger states from dominating the smaller states. Now it is in place to keep Presidents from being chosen by the Northeast Corridor, Southern California, and Chicago. Without it the Candidates would pander to those areas and as a result federal funding to go disproportionately to them.

I think that it should be determined by state votes. Whoever gets more state votes should get the presidency

the way it is now is kind of uneven, some bigger state has more votes than others which is a little unfair. California alone has 55 elect vote.
